Wallet Sizes: Dimensions of Every Wallet Type in Inches and mm
For anyone choosing a wallet that fits a particular pocket, bag or set of cards and cash. The dimensions of the things a wallet has to hold explain why each style is the size it is.
A standard bifold wallet is about 4.3–4.7 × 3.4–3.7 in (110–120 × 85–95 mm) closed and 0.4–0.8 in thick. Slim cardholders are about 4 × 3 in (100 × 75 mm), trifolds about 4 × 3.3 in, and long or continental wallets about 7.5 × 4 in (190 × 100 mm). Every wallet is built around a payment card of 85.6 × 54 mm (3.37 × 2.13 in).

Wallet size chart
Dimensions are closed size, width × height, with the typical thickness when filled with 6 to 10 cards. They vary by maker, but each style stays within a narrow range because it is built around the same cards and banknotes.
| Style | Inches | Millimeters | Thickness | Holds cash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Card holder / card sleeve | 3.9–4.3 × 2.8–3.2 | 100–110 × 70–80 | 0.2–0.4 in (5–10 mm) | Folded notes only |
| Slim or front-pocket bifold | 4.0–4.3 × 3.0–3.3 | 100–110 × 75–85 | 0.3–0.5 in (8–13 mm) | Folded in half |
| Standard bifold (billfold) | 4.3–4.7 × 3.4–3.7 | 110–120 × 85–95 | 0.4–0.8 in (10–20 mm) | Full-length, folds once with the wallet |
| Trifold | 3.5–4.3 × 3.0–3.5 | 90–110 × 75–90 | 0.6–1.0 in (15–25 mm) | Full-length, folds twice |
| European bifold with coin pocket | 4.3–4.7 × 3.7–4.3 | 110–120 × 95–110 | 0.6–1.0 in (15–25 mm) | Full-length, plus coins |
| Long or continental | 7.3–7.9 × 3.7–4.1 | 185–200 × 95–105 | 0.6–1.2 in (15–30 mm) | Flat, unfolded |
| Travel or passport wallet | 5.3–5.7 × 3.9–4.3 | 135–145 × 100–110 | 0.5–1.0 in (13–25 mm) | Folded or flat, plus passport |
| Checkbook wallet | 6.5–7 × 3.5–3.7 | 165–180 × 90–95 | 0.5–1.0 in (13–25 mm) | Flat, plus a checkbook |
When a listing gives a single size, it is usually the closed size. If it gives a larger width such as 9 in for a bifold, that is the open size; halve it to get the closed width.
What a wallet has to fit
Wallet dimensions start from three objects: payment cards, banknotes and, for travel wallets, the passport.
| Item | Millimeters | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| Credit, debit or ID card (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1) | 85.6 × 54.0 × 0.76 | 3.37 × 2.13 × 0.03 |
| US business card | 88.9 × 50.8 | 3.5 × 2 |
| US dollar bill (all denominations) | 156.1 × 66.3 | 6.14 × 2.61 |
| Euro: €5 / €20 / €50 | 120 × 62 / 133 × 72 / 140 × 77 | 4.72 × 2.44 / 5.24 × 2.83 / 5.51 × 3.03 |
| Euro: €100 / €200 (Europa series) | 147 × 77 / 153 × 77 | 5.79 × 3.03 / 6.02 × 3.03 |
| UK: £5 / £10 / £20 / £50 | 125 × 65 / 132 × 69 / 139 × 73 / 146 × 77 | 4.92 × 2.56 / 5.20 × 2.72 / 5.47 × 2.87 / 5.75 × 3.03 |
| Passport booklet (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-3) | 125 × 88 | 4.92 × 3.46 |
Two consequences are worth knowing before you buy:
- Euro and pound notes are taller than dollars. A €50 note is 77 mm tall, nearly 11 mm taller than a dollar bill. Bifolds cut closely around the dollar bill can leave larger euro and sterling notes sticking out at the top, so check the closed height (at least 3.5 in or 90 mm) if you carry those currencies.
- A long wallet needs an interior over 156 mm to hold dollar bills flat. That is why continental wallets are at least 7.3 in (185 mm) wide on the outside.
How many cards each style holds
Cards are 0.76 mm thick, so ten cards stacked are 7.6 mm (0.3 in) before leather, stitching and cash. Wallet leather is typically around 1 mm thick per layer, and every card slot adds a layer.
| Style | Comfortable card count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Card sleeve | 3–6 | Single slot or one each side |
| Minimalist / front-pocket | 4–8 | Often has a quick-access slot |
| Standard bifold | 6–12 | Thickness rises fast past 8 cards |
| Trifold | 6–10 | Three layers of leather in the fold |
| Long or continental | 10–20 | Lies flat, so thickness spreads out |
RFID-blocking layers add little thickness. Metal and carbon-fiber card cases have their own plates, springs or ejector mechanisms, so compare their filled thickness, not just the card count, with a leather cardholder.
Pocket and bag fit
- Back trouser pocket. Men's jeans back pockets are usually wider and deeper than any bifold or trifold, roughly 5.5 to 6.5 in across. The limit is thickness, not size: a wallet over about 0.75 in thick pushes the hip up when you sit.
- Front trouser pocket. Front pockets are narrower at the opening. Aim for a wallet under about 4.3 in wide and 0.5 in thick. The jeans size guide covers pocket styles and cuts.
- Jacket inside pocket. Suit jacket inside pockets usually take a long or checkbook wallet up to about 7 in, and a slim profile keeps the jacket front flat.
- Handbag or purse. A long wallet needs a bag interior of at least 8.5 in (22 cm) across; a bifold fits almost any bag. The purse size guide explains which bag sizes fit which wallets, and the clutch size guide covers small evening bags where even a bifold can be too thick.
Lay your current wallet on a ruler, closed, with your usual cards and cash inside. Width, height and the thickness at the fold are the three numbers to compare with listings; empty product dimensions understate the filled thickness.
Women's wallet sizes
Women's wallets are sold in the same styles but lean toward larger formats. The common sizes are:
- Small zip-around or compact wallet: about 4.3–4.7 × 3.5–4 in (110–120 × 90–100 mm), usually with a coin pocket.
- Continental or zip-around long wallet: about 7.5–8 × 4 in (190–200 × 100 mm), holding 12 or more cards and flat notes.
- Wristlet or phone wallet: about 7–8 × 4–4.5 in (180–200 × 100–115 mm), with a strap and a compartment sized for a large phone of about 6.4 × 3.1 in (163 × 78 mm).
Before buying a phone wallet, compare the phone's height and width in its case with the compartment's interior. Most current large phones are close to the limit of a 7 in wristlet. For more on matching bags and wallets, see the handbag size guide; for belts that match a leather wallet, the belt size chart covers widths and sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of wallet size cards?
Wallet-size cards such as credit, debit, ID and loyalty cards follow the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 format: 85.60 × 53.98 mm (3.370 × 2.125 in) and 0.76 mm thick. Card slots in wallets are cut for this size.
What size is a wallet-size photo?
A wallet-size print is usually 2.5 × 3.5 in (64 × 89 mm), though some labs sell 2 × 3 in. A 2.5 × 3.5 in print is slightly larger than a credit card, so it fits a wallet's clear ID window only if trimmed. See the photo size guide for all print formats.
Does a business card fit in a wallet card slot?
A European business card (85 × 55 mm) fits like a credit card. A US business card is 3.5 × 2 in (88.9 × 50.8 mm), 3.3 mm wider than a credit card, so it can be tight or stick out in slim card slots.
How thick should a wallet be?
Each card adds about 0.76 mm (0.03 in), so eight cards add about 6 mm before leather and cash. A front-pocket wallet stays comfortable up to roughly 0.5 in (13 mm) thick; back-pocket bifolds over about 0.75 in (19 mm) are uncomfortable to sit on.
What purse size fits a long wallet?
A continental wallet is about 7.5 to 8 in (19 to 20 cm) long, so the bag needs an interior width of at least 8.5 in (22 cm). Most crossbody bags under 9 in wide are too small; medium shoulder bags and totes fit it easily.
