Photo Print Sizes: Standard Dimensions, Pixels and Cropping
Every standard photo print size with its metric equivalent, the resolution it needs, and how much of a phone or camera photo is cropped away. Also covered: wallet, passport and instant-film sizes, and how many prints fit on one sheet.
The standard photo print sizes are 4 × 6 in (10.2 × 15.2 cm), 5 × 7 in (12.7 × 17.8 cm) and 8 × 10 in (20.3 × 25.4 cm), followed by 11 × 14, 16 × 20 and 20 × 30 in for enlargements. Wallet prints are 2.5 × 3.5 in (6.4 × 8.9 cm). At 300 DPI a 4 × 6 print needs 1200 × 1800 pixels and an 8 × 10 needs 2400 × 3000 pixels.

Standard photo print sizes
Print sizes are named short side first. The pixel column is the resolution for a sharp print at 300 DPI; 200 DPI still looks good at arm's length if your file is smaller.
| Print size | cm | Ratio | Pixels at 300 DPI | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 × 3.5 in (wallet) | 6.4 × 8.9 | 5:7 | 750 × 1050 | Wallets, school photos |
| 3.5 × 5 in (3R) | 8.9 × 12.7 | 5:7 | 1050 × 1500 | Small prints, inserts |
| 4 × 6 in (4R) | 10.2 × 15.2 | 2:3 | 1200 × 1800 | Standard snapshot, albums |
| 5 × 7 in (5R) | 12.7 × 17.8 | 5:7 | 1500 × 2100 | Desk frames, cards |
| 6 × 8 in (6R) | 15.2 × 20.3 | 3:4 | 1800 × 2400 | Phone photos uncropped |
| 8 × 10 in (8R) | 20.3 × 25.4 | 4:5 | 2400 × 3000 | Portraits, wall frames |
| 8.5 × 11 in | 21.6 × 27.9 | Letter | 2550 × 3300 | Home printing on Letter photo paper |
| 8 × 12 in | 20.3 × 30.5 | 2:3 | 2400 × 3600 | Camera photos uncropped |
| 11 × 14 in (11R) | 27.9 × 35.6 | 11:14 | 3300 × 4200 | Wall portraits |
| 12 × 18 in | 30.5 × 45.7 | 2:3 | 3600 × 5400 | Enlargements |
| 16 × 20 in | 40.6 × 50.8 | 4:5 | 4800 × 6000 | Large wall prints |
| 20 × 30 in | 50.8 × 76.2 | 2:3 | 6000 × 9000 | Poster-size photos |
Above 20 × 30 in, photo prints overlap with poster sizes; see poster sizes for 24 × 36 in and larger, and canvas sizes for prints on stretched canvas.
Photo sizes in cm (European and metric labs)
Labs outside the US sell prints in centimeters. The common sizes are close to, but not the same as, the inch sizes, so a 10 × 15 cm print sits loose in a 4 × 6 in frame by about 2 mm.
| Metric size | Inches | Nearest US size |
|---|---|---|
| 9 × 13 cm | 3.5 × 5.1 | 3.5 × 5 in |
| 10 × 15 cm | 3.9 × 5.9 | 4 × 6 in |
| 13 × 18 cm | 5.1 × 7.1 | 5 × 7 in |
| 15 × 20 cm | 5.9 × 7.9 | 6 × 8 in |
| 20 × 25 cm | 7.9 × 9.8 | 8 × 10 in |
| 20 × 30 cm | 7.9 × 11.8 | 8 × 12 in |
| 30 × 40 cm | 11.8 × 15.7 | 12 × 16 in |
| 30 × 45 cm | 11.8 × 17.7 | 12 × 18 in |
The "R" names (3R, 4R, 5R, 8R) used in Asia and by some labs are the inch sizes: 4R is 4 × 6 in, 5R is 5 × 7 in, 8R is 8 × 10 in.
Aspect ratio: how much of your photo gets cropped
Cameras and phones shoot in fixed proportions, and each print size has its own. When they differ, the lab trims whichever side is too long for the print shape. Most phones shoot 4:3; DSLR and mirrorless cameras shoot 3:2.
| Print size | Print ratio | From a 3:2 camera | From a 4:3 phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 6, 8 × 12, 12 × 18, 20 × 30 | 3:2 (1.50) | None | 11% of the short side |
| 5 × 7 | 1.40 | 7% | 5% of the short side |
| 6 × 8, 12 × 16 | 4:3 (1.33) | 11% | None |
| 8 × 10, 16 × 20 | 5:4 (1.25) | 17% | 6% |
| 11 × 14 | 1.27 | 15% | 5% |
| Square (8 × 8, 12 × 12) | 1:1 | 33% | 25% |
So 4 × 6 is the right size for camera photos, and 6 × 8 (or 4 × 5.3 in, offered by some labs as a "digital" print) for phone photos. An 8 × 10 from a camera loses a sixth of its length: frame group shots loosely if you plan to print at 8 × 10. A 4 × 6 print fits a 5 × 7 frame only with a mat or a gap; the shapes do not match.
Online labs and kiosks crop to fill the paper by default and center the crop. If heads or text sit near the edge, crop the photo yourself to the print ratio first, or choose "fit" and accept white borders.
How large can you print from your camera or phone?
Divide the image's pixel dimensions by the print resolution. At 300 DPI the result is a print you can inspect up close; at 150 DPI it still looks sharp on a wall viewed from a few feet.
| Camera | Pixels | At 300 DPI | At 150 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 MP phone (4:3) | 4032 × 3024 | 10 × 13.4 in | 20 × 26.9 in |
| 24 MP camera (3:2) | 6000 × 4000 | 13.3 × 20 in | 26.7 × 40 in |
| 48 MP phone, full-res mode (4:3) | 8064 × 6048 | 20.2 × 26.9 in | 40.3 × 53.8 in |
Photos sent through messaging apps or downloaded from social media are often resized to around 1080 to 2048 px on the long side. At 300 DPI, 1800 px is only enough for a 4 × 6. Print from the original file whenever possible.
Wallet, passport and ID photo sizes
| Type | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet | 2.5 × 3.5 in (64 × 89 mm) | 4 per 5 × 7 print, 8 per 8 × 10 |
| Small wallet | 2 × 3 in (51 × 76 mm) | Offered by some school-photo packages |
| US passport and visa | 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | Head 1 to 1 3/8 in (25 to 35 mm) chin to crown |
| UK, EU and Schengen passport | 35 × 45 mm | UK: head 29 to 34 mm chin to crown |
| Canada passport | 50 × 70 mm | Head 31 to 36 mm chin to crown |
Six 2 × 2 in passport photos fit on a single 4 × 6 print (a 2 × 3 grid), and six 35 × 45 mm photos fit on a 4 × 6 as well, which is why pharmacies print ID photos on 4 × 6 paper. Rules change and differ by application type; check the issuing authority's current requirements before printing.
Instant film photo sizes
| Film | Card size | Image area |
|---|---|---|
| Instax Mini | 54 × 86 mm (2.1 × 3.4 in) | 46 × 62 mm |
| Instax Square | 72 × 86 mm (2.8 × 3.4 in) | 62 × 62 mm |
| Instax Wide | 108 × 86 mm (4.3 × 3.4 in) | 99 × 62 mm |
| Polaroid i-Type / 600 | 88 × 107 mm (3.5 × 4.2 in) | 79 × 79 mm |
Instax Mini is close to a credit card in size (54 × 86 mm versus 54 × 85.6 mm), so it fits card sleeves and wallet slots.
Printing several photos on one sheet
- Letter (8.5 × 11 in): two 5 × 7 prints, one 8 × 10 with borders, or four photos of about 3.6 × 4.9 in with 0.5 in margins.
- A4 (210 × 297 mm): two 13 × 18 cm prints, one 20 × 25 cm, or four of about 89 × 132 mm.
- 8 × 10 in sheet: four 4 × 5 in prints, or two 5 × 7 prints side by side with a 1 × 10 in strip left over.
- 4 × 6 in sheet: two 3 × 4 in prints, or six 2 × 2 in ID photos.
To mail prints flat, an A6 envelope fits a 4 × 6 and an A7 fits a 5 × 7; see envelopes for each paper and card size. For frames and mats that match each print, see picture frame sizes, and for choosing print sizes for a wall, the wall art size guide.
Frequently asked questions
Which is bigger, 5 × 7 or 8 × 10?
8 × 10 is bigger: 80 sq in against 35 sq in, so more than twice the area. A 5 × 7 print sits inside an 8 × 10 with 1.5 in to spare on every side, which is exactly the border a standard 8 × 10 mat for a 5 × 7 photo gives.
What size is each photo if I print 4 pictures on one 8 × 10 sheet?
4 × 5 in each, in a 2 × 2 grid with no borders. A 4 × 5 print is 4:5, so 3:2 camera photos lose about 17% of their length when cropped to fit.
How big should photos be to fit 4 on a page in Word?
On a Letter page with 0.5 in margins and a 1/4 in gap, each photo can be about 3.6 × 4.9 in. On A4 with 12.7 mm margins and a 6 mm gap, about 89 × 132 mm. Lock the aspect ratio when resizing so photos are not stretched.
Will an 8 × 10 photo fit on A4 paper?
Yes. 8 × 10 in is 203 × 254 mm and A4 is 210 × 297 mm, leaving 3.5 mm at each side and 43 mm in length. On Letter (8.5 × 11 in) it leaves 1/4 in at each side and 1/2 in at the top and bottom.
What size are wallet photos in mm?
The common wallet size is 2.5 × 3.5 in, or 64 × 89 mm. Some labs print a smaller 2 × 3 in (51 × 76 mm) wallet. Four 2.5 × 3.5 wallets fit on one 5 × 7 print, and eight fit on an 8 × 10.
What comes after 4 × 6, 5 × 7 and 8 × 10?
The next standard sizes are 8.5 × 11 in, 11 × 14 in, 12 × 18 in, 16 × 20 in, 20 × 30 in and 24 × 36 in. 11 × 14 is the usual step for a wall print that still fits a ready-made frame with a mat.
