Purse Sizes: What Small, Medium and Large Mean and What Each Holds

For anyone looking at a purse listing such as "10 × 8 × 3 in" and wondering what will actually fit. Sizes are grouped by width, with the everyday items each size holds and the right strap length for your height.

Quick answer

Purse sizes are usually described by width: a small purse is about 8–10 in (20–25 cm) wide, a medium purse 10–13 in (25–33 cm), a large purse 13–16 in (33–41 cm), and anything wider is oversized. A typical medium purse measures around 11 × 8 × 4 in (28 × 20 × 10 cm), enough for a full-size wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses and a small pouch.

Purse size chart

There is no official purse sizing, but retailers and buyers use width as the shorthand, and the categories below match how most listings describe their bags. Each row gives a typical bag in that class and what it holds without bulging.

Box volume (width × height × depth) overstates what soft or tapered bags hold, but it is the fairest way to compare listings: a bag that doubles in volume is a size up, even if its width grows by only 2 in. Volume in liters is cubic centimeters divided by 1,000, or cubic inches × 0.01639.

These sizes apply across styles. A small shoulder bag and a small crossbody can be the same box; what changes is the strap. For dimensions by style (satchel, hobo, bucket, tote and so on) see the handbag size chart.

Reading a purse listing

Listings usually give three numbers. When the order is not labeled, the smallest is the depth; of the other two, a bag that is wider than tall gives width first in most US listings.

  1. Identify the width and place the bag in the chart above.
  2. Check the depth. Depth decides bulk. Under 2 in (5 cm) is flat, like a clutch; 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) takes a wallet and a glasses case side by side; 5 in (13 cm) or more takes a water bottle lying down.
  3. Compare the longest item you carry with the interior width, roughly 0.5 in (1.3 cm) less than the listed exterior on a structured bag.
  4. Multiply the three for volume if you are comparing two bags of different shapes.

Worked examples from common questions:

  • 9 × 6 in: a small purse. With 2.5 to 3 in of depth it holds a phone, compact wallet, keys, lip balm and folded sunglasses, about 2.2 to 2.7 liters.
  • 10 in wide: the border of small and medium. A 10 × 7 × 3 in bag (3.4 L) fits a full-size bifold wallet; a long wallet will only fit if the interior is at least 8.5 in.
  • 10 × 9 in: nearly square, typical of a small bucket or tote-shaped bag. The extra height takes a water bottle standing up if the depth is 3 in or more.
  • 10.5 × 8 in: a medium purse. Fits an iPad mini (7.7 × 5.3 in) but not an 11-inch iPad (9.8 × 7.1 in) once interior walls are allowed for.

Pack test

Put everything you carry on a table and push it into a rectangle. Measure the rectangle and the height of the pile. Add about 1 in to each and you have the minimum interior your next purse needs.

Crossbody strap length for your height

A crossbody bag is most comfortable when the top of the bag sits at or just above the hip bone. Strap drop (top of strap to top of bag) that achieves this depends on height and build, so measure instead of guessing.

  1. Hang a tape measure (or a piece of string) from the top of one shoulder, across the chest, to the opposite hip bone.
  2. That length is your ideal strap drop. For most adults it falls between 20 and 26 in (51 to 66 cm); shorter people and those wearing the bag over light clothing sit at the lower end.
  3. Allow 2 to 3 in more if you will wear the bag over a winter coat.
  4. Check the listing's strap drop range, not the total strap length. An adjustable strap that reaches 26 in of drop will usually also go short enough for a petite frame.

Shoulder straps work differently: a drop of 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) puts the bag under the arm or at the waist. Under 8 in, the strap will not pass over a coat sleeve.

Purse size and body size

There is no sizing rule linking bags to bodies, but proportion changes how a purse reads. Petite frames often prefer small and medium purses of 8 to 12 in, and tall frames carry 13 to 16 in bags without them looking oversized.

A purse that is used for travel has a hard limit: the airline's personal-item allowance. Medium and large purses usually fit; oversized purses may not. The handbag size guide lists current US limits, and the tote bag size guide covers bags for work and travel.

Purse means different things in the US and UK

In American English a purse is any handbag, and this page uses that meaning. In British English a purse is a small wallet with a coin section, roughly 4 × 3.5 in to 7.5 × 4 in (100 × 90 mm to 190 × 100 mm), and a "coin purse" is smaller still, around 4 × 3 in. If a British shop lists a "purse" at 19 cm wide, it is a long wallet, not a bag.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common crossbody purse sizes?

Most crossbody purses are 8 to 11 in wide, 6 to 8 in tall and 2 to 4 in deep (20 to 28 × 15 to 20 × 5 to 10 cm). The single most common shape is close to 9 × 7 × 3 in (23 × 18 × 8 cm), which fits a large phone, a compact wallet and keys.

Is 8.7 × 6.7 × 2.8 in a crossbody size?

Yes. 8.7 × 6.7 × 2.8 in (22 × 17 × 7 cm) is a typical small crossbody, about 2.7 liters by box volume. It takes a large phone lying flat, a card holder or compact wallet, keys and lip balm, but not a long wallet or a tablet.

Is an 8 inch purse too small?

For a phone, card holder, keys and a lipstick, no. It is too small if you carry a long wallet (about 7.5 in), a glasses case plus sunglasses, a water bottle or anything in A5 size.

Is 14 × 10 in a good size for an everyday purse?

Yes, if you carry a lot. A 14 × 10 in (36 × 25 cm) bag is a large purse that fits an A4 folder lying flat and, with a few centimeters of depth, a 13-inch laptop. For a phone-wallet-keys routine it will feel empty and heavy.

How big is a 25 cm purse in inches?

25 cm is 9.8 in, the boundary between a small and a medium purse. Expect something like 25 × 18 × 8 cm (9.8 × 7.1 × 3.1 in), which holds a full-size bifold wallet and phone but not a tablet.

What does purse mean in the UK?

In British English a purse is a small wallet, usually a woman's, with a coin pocket, about 4 × 3.5 in to 7.5 × 4 in. What Americans call a purse, the British call a handbag.
