How to size a handbag
List what you carry first
The right bag size is the one that holds your carry list with about 20% slack. Pick a hard item (laptop, water bottle, planner) and confirm the bag's interior dimensions match it — exterior dimensions include the strap mounts and structure and overstate the usable space.
Strap drop matters as much as bag size
Strap drop is the distance from the bag's top edge to the highest point of the strap. Too short and the bag rides up under the arm; too long and it bounces against the hip. Most adults sit comfortably with a 9–10″ drop for shoulder bags and a 22–24″ drop for crossbody bags worn at hip height.
Picking by use
- Daily essentials only — clutch or small crossbody (about 8–10″ wide).
- Work, with documents/tablet — medium shoulder or satchel (12–14″ wide, structured).
- Work with laptop — large tote or satchel with a 13″ or 15″ padded sleeve.
- Travel / weekend — weekender or duffel (18–22″ wide).
Common mistakes
- Sizing by exterior dimensions; the interior is what holds your stuff.
- Choosing the smallest bag that "technically fits" your laptop — you'll fight the zipper every day.
- Ignoring weight when empty. Heavily structured bags can weigh 2–3 lb before anything goes inside.
