Clutch Sizes: Dimensions by Style and What Fits Inside
For anyone choosing an evening or wedding bag and needing to know, before the event, whether a phone and keys will actually fit. Clutches are small enough that a centimeter decides it.
An envelope clutch is about 10–12 × 6–7 in (25–30 × 15–18 cm) and 1–1.5 in deep. A box clutch or minaudière is about 6–7.5 × 3.5–4.5 in (15–19 × 9–11 cm) and 2–2.5 in deep. Oversized pouch clutches run 11–14 × 7–9 in. A large phone (about 6.4 × 3.1 in, 163 × 78 mm) needs an interior at least 6.6 in long, which rules out many box clutches.

Clutch size chart by style
Clutch styles differ more in shape than in width. Depth is what separates them: a flat envelope and a rigid box clutch can hold the same things, but in very different shapes.
| Style | Inches | Centimeters | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box clutch / minaudière | 6–7.5 × 3.5–4.5 × 2–2.5 | 15–19 × 9–11 × 5–6 | Rigid shell, often metal or beaded; smallest interior |
| Frame or kiss-lock clutch | 7–9 × 4–5.5 × 2–3 | 18–23 × 10–14 × 5–8 | Metal frame opening; deeper than it looks |
| Wristlet clutch | 7–8 × 4–5 × 1 | 18–20 × 10–13 × 2–3 | Wrist strap; sized around a phone |
| Envelope clutch | 10–12 × 6–7 × 0.75–1.5 | 25–30 × 15–18 × 2–4 | Flat with a triangular flap; the classic size |
| Foldover clutch | 12–14 × 9–10 open, 5–6 tall folded | 30–36 × 23–25, 13–15 folded | Folds in half; unfolded it takes a tablet |
| Oversized pouch clutch | 11–14 × 7–9 × 1–2 | 28–36 × 18–23 × 2.5–5 | Soft, unstructured; day-to-evening |
The common thread is depth of 2.5 in (6 cm) or less, and no shoulder strap or a removable chain. A bag deeper than about 3 in starts to behave like a small shoulder bag, which is covered in the handbag size chart.
Will your phone fit?
This is the question that decides most clutch purchases. Phones have grown, and many evening bags were designed around older, smaller phones. Interior dimensions are usually about 0.25 to 0.5 in (6 to 12 mm) smaller than the exterior on rigid clutches, because of the frame and lining.
| Phone | Size (without case) | Minimum interior length |
|---|---|---|
| 6.1-inch class (e.g. iPhone 16) | 5.81 × 2.82 in (147.6 × 71.6 mm) | 6.0 in (152 mm) |
| 6.7–6.9-inch class (e.g. iPhone 16 Pro Max) | 6.42 × 3.06 in (163 × 77.6 mm) | 6.6 in (168 mm) |
| Either phone in a typical case | add about 0.1 in per side | add about 0.2 in (5 mm) |
- Envelope and pouch clutches fit any current phone lying flat, with room to spare.
- Box clutches under 7 in wide often have an interior of 6 to 6.5 in. A 6.1-inch phone fits; a large phone usually does not, or only diagonally if the box is tall enough.
- Frame clutches narrow at the opening. The phone may fit inside but not pass through the frame. Check the opening width, not just the body.
- Wristlets sold as phone clutches state the largest phone they take; most are built for phones up to about 6.5 in tall.
The phone screen size guide lists body dimensions for current phone sizes if yours is not in the table.
A box clutch that will not take your phone is a common last-minute problem. If buying online, compare the phone's length in its case with the listed interior width, and if only exterior figures are given, subtract 0.5 in.
What else fits
A typical evening load is small, but each item has a fixed size:
| Item | Typical size | Fits in |
|---|---|---|
| Card holder | 4 × 3 in (100 × 75 mm) | Every style |
| Credit card and ID loose | 3.37 × 2.13 in (85.6 × 54 mm) | Every style |
| Lipstick | about 3 in long, 0.75 in across | Every style |
| Powder compact | 2.5–3.25 in across, 0.5–0.75 in thick | Every style, but uses much of a box clutch |
| Car key fob | 2.5–3.5 in long, up to 1 in thick | Every style except the flattest envelopes |
| Bifold wallet | 4.5 × 3.5 × 0.6 in | Pouch, foldover, envelopes over 1 in deep, larger box clutches |
| Long wallet | 7.5 × 4 in | Oversized pouch or foldover only |
Thickness is the limit in an envelope clutch. Four items of 0.5 in each stacked flat will not fit 1 in of depth, so spread them across the width. A box clutch has the opposite problem: deep enough, but short. Wallet options sized for small bags are in the wallet size guide.
Choosing a clutch size for the occasion
- Black tie and formal evenings: a box clutch or minaudière of at least 7 in wide, or an envelope clutch of 9 to 11 in. Carry the minimum: phone, a card, a key, lipstick.
- Weddings: you will hold the bag for hours and need tissues and perhaps a phone charger cable. An envelope clutch of 10 to 12 in, or a clutch with a chain strap, is easier than a small box.
- Day use and travel: an oversized pouch of 11 to 14 in, or a foldover that opens to take a tablet. Many are used as an organizer inside a tote, which the tote bag size guide covers.
- Makeup or travel pouch double-duty: a flat zip pouch can work as a clutch; the cosmetic bag size guide lists pouch sizes that cross over.
Proportion matters with a clutch because it is held in the hand and seen against the body. An oversized clutch of 14 in looks deliberate with day clothes; at a formal event a smaller, structured clutch is more usual. For bags that sit between a clutch and a full handbag, the purse size guide covers mini and small sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What are standard envelope clutch dimensions?
Most envelope clutches are 10 to 12 in wide, 6 to 7 in tall and 0.75 to 1.5 in deep (25 to 30 × 15 to 18 × 2 to 4 cm). The flap takes up part of the front, so the usable pocket is close to the full width but 1 to 2 in shorter than the outside height.
Will an iPhone fit in a clutch?
A standard iPhone 16 is 5.81 × 2.82 in (147.6 × 71.6 mm) and fits almost every clutch, including most box clutches. A Pro Max or other large phone of about 6.4 × 3.1 in needs an interior of at least 6.6 in, so check box and frame clutches carefully; in a case, add about 0.2 in.
What size bag is between a tote and a clutch?
Shoulder bags, crossbody bags and satchels fill the gap: roughly 9 to 13 in wide with 3 to 5 in of depth, against a clutch's 1 to 2 in and a tote's 5 to 7 in. See the purse size guide for small and medium sizes.
How do I know the size of a clutch listed as OS?
OS means one size, so the label tells you nothing about dimensions. Look for the width, height and depth in the product details, or ask the seller; a clutch can be anything from a 6 in minaudière to a 14 in pouch.
What size clutch for a wedding guest?
For a phone, card holder, key, lipstick and a compact, a clutch of at least 9 × 5 in with 1.5 in of depth, or a box clutch at least 7 in wide, is comfortable. Add an inch of width if you also want a small pack of tissues.
