How to size a pergola for your yard
Measure the usable area, not the lot
Pergola size by use: 10′×10′ for a 4-chair conversation set. 12′×14′ for dining 4–6. 16′×16′+ for outdoor kitchens or larger groups. Beam height: 8–10′ standard; lower than 8′ feels cramped, higher than 10′ loses the intimate ceiling effect.
Clearance from structures
Most jurisdictions require setbacks from property lines, structures, and overhead utility lines. Even where setbacks aren't legally required, allow at least 24″ from any wall or fence for maintenance access and to keep moisture from damaging both the structure and the new piece.
Anchoring and weight
Pergola posts need footings below frost line in cold climates and concrete piers anywhere with significant wind. Wood pergolas weigh ~50 lb/sq ft; aluminum ~20 lb/sq ft. Adjustable louvered pergolas need a power source and rain-sensor wiring if motorized.
Common mistakes
- Sizing to the lot dimensions rather than the level usable space.
- Forgetting setback rules — some require permits even for things that look freestanding.
- Ignoring sun and wind direction; the right size in the wrong spot becomes unusable in summer or storms.
