Fire Pit Sizes: Complete Dimensions Guide

Fire pit sizes range from compact 24 inch portable models to large 60 inch in-ground installations. This guide compares dimensions, seating capacity, and clearance requirements for portable, in-ground, and patio fire pits to help you choose safely.

Standard Fire Pit Sizes by Type

Fire pits are measured by diameter for round models or length and width for rectangular designs. Size determines heat output and seating capacity.

Fire Pit Type Diameter or Size (in / cm) Depth (in / cm) Seating Capacity
Small Portable 24 to 28 / 61 to 71 10 to 12 / 25 to 30 2 to 4 people
Medium Portable 30 to 36 / 76 to 91 12 to 14 / 30 to 36 4 to 6 people
Large Portable 40 to 48 / 102 to 122 14 to 16 / 36 to 41 6 to 8 people
In-Ground Small 30 to 36 / 76 to 91 12 to 18 / 30 to 46 4 to 6 people
In-Ground Medium 40 to 48 / 102 to 122 18 to 24 / 46 to 61 6 to 10 people
In-Ground Large 50 to 60 / 127 to 152 24 to 30 / 61 to 76 10 to 15 people

Fire Pit Fuel Types and BTU Output

Fuel type affects fire pit size requirements, heat output, and installation complexity.

Fuel Type Typical BTU Range Best Size (diameter in / cm) Installation
Wood Burning Varies by wood amount 30 to 48 / 76 to 122 Portable or permanent, minimal setup
Propane Portable 40000 to 60000 BTU 28 to 36 / 71 to 91 No installation, tank storage needed
Natural Gas 60000 to 90000 BTU 36 to 60 / 91 to 152 Professional gas line installation required
Gel Fuel 3000 to 9000 BTU 20 to 30 / 51 to 76 Tabletop, no installation, limited heat

Safety Clearance Requirements

Fire pits require adequate clearance from structures, vegetation, and seating for safe operation. Local codes may have additional requirements.

Fire Pit Size Min Distance from House (ft / m) Min Distance from Seating (ft / m) Min Overhead Clearance (ft / m)
24 to 30 inch 10 to 15 / 3.0 to 4.6 3 to 4 / 0.9 to 1.2 21 / 6.4
30 to 40 inch 15 to 20 / 4.6 to 6.1 4 to 5 / 1.2 to 1.5 21 / 6.4
40 to 60 inch 20 to 25 / 6.1 to 7.6 5 to 7 / 1.5 to 2.1 21 / 6.4

How to size a fire pit for your yard

Measure the usable area, not the lot

Fire-pit diameter: 30–36″ intimate, 4–6 people; 36–42″ standard, 6–8 people; 48″+ large, 8+ people. Surrounding seating ring should sit 36–48″ from the fire face for comfortable warmth without smoke in the eyes.

Clearance from structures

Most jurisdictions require setbacks from property lines, structures, and overhead utility lines. Even where setbacks aren't legally required, allow at least 24″ from any wall or fence for maintenance access and to keep moisture from damaging both the structure and the new piece.

Anchoring and weight

Wood-burning pits need 10 ft clearance from any structure or tree, no overhead branches, and a non-combustible base (gravel, stone, concrete). Gas pits need a level surface, an LP tank or natural-gas line, and 3–6 ft of structural clearance per the manufacturer's spec.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing to the lot dimensions rather than the level usable space.
  • Forgetting setback rules — some require permits even for things that look freestanding.
  • Ignoring sun and wind direction; the right size in the wrong spot becomes unusable in summer or storms.
