How to size a fire pit for your yard
Measure the usable area, not the lot
Fire-pit diameter: 30–36″ intimate, 4–6 people; 36–42″ standard, 6–8 people; 48″+ large, 8+ people. Surrounding seating ring should sit 36–48″ from the fire face for comfortable warmth without smoke in the eyes.
Clearance from structures
Most jurisdictions require setbacks from property lines, structures, and overhead utility lines. Even where setbacks aren't legally required, allow at least 24″ from any wall or fence for maintenance access and to keep moisture from damaging both the structure and the new piece.
Anchoring and weight
Wood-burning pits need 10 ft clearance from any structure or tree, no overhead branches, and a non-combustible base (gravel, stone, concrete). Gas pits need a level surface, an LP tank or natural-gas line, and 3–6 ft of structural clearance per the manufacturer's spec.
Common mistakes
- Sizing to the lot dimensions rather than the level usable space.
- Forgetting setback rules — some require permits even for things that look freestanding.
- Ignoring sun and wind direction; the right size in the wrong spot becomes unusable in summer or storms.
