Paper Sizes: A, B and US Charts in Inches, mm and cm
Two systems cover almost all paper in use: the ISO A, B and C series used in most of the world, and the inch-based Letter, Legal and Tabloid family used in the US, Canada and parts of Latin America. The charts below give both in millimeters and inches, with what each size is for.
The most common paper sizes are A4 (210 × 297 mm, 8.27 × 11.69 in), A3 (297 × 420 mm, 11.69 × 16.54 in) and A5 (148 × 210 mm, 5.83 × 8.27 in) internationally, and Letter (8.5 × 11 in, 215.9 × 279.4 mm), Legal (8.5 × 14 in, 215.9 × 355.6 mm) and Tabloid (11 × 17 in, 279.4 × 431.8 mm) in North America.

Standard paper sizes at a glance
These are the sizes you are likely to meet at a printer, an office supply store or in a print dialog. The ISO sizes are defined in millimeters and the US sizes in inches, so each table converts in one direction only.
| Size | mm | Inches | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 | 8.27 × 11.69 | Office paper everywhere except North America |
| US Letter | 215.9 × 279.4 | 8.5 × 11 | Office paper in the US, Canada, Mexico, Philippines |
| US Legal | 215.9 × 355.6 | 8.5 × 14 | Contracts, legal pads, some government forms |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | 11.69 × 16.54 | Drawings, spreadsheets, small posters |
| Tabloid / Ledger | 279.4 × 431.8 | 11 × 17 | Newsletters, menus, posters (Ledger is the landscape name) |
| A5 | 148 × 210 | 5.83 × 8.27 | Notebooks, flyers, booklets |
| Half Letter (Statement) | 139.7 × 215.9 | 5.5 × 8.5 | Planners, booklets, invoices |
| Executive | 184.2 × 266.7 | 7.25 × 10.5 | Premium letterhead, some notepads |
| A6 | 105 × 148 | 4.13 × 5.83 | Postcards, pocket notebooks |
| B5 (ISO) | 176 × 250 | 6.93 × 9.84 | Books, school notebooks |
A-series paper sizes (ISO 216)
The A series starts from A0, a sheet of one square meter, and halves the area at each step while keeping the side ratio at 1:√2 (1:1.414). That ratio is why an A3 sheet folds into two A4 sheets with identical proportions, and why a photocopier enlarges A4 to A3 at 141% without cropping. The A4 paper size guide explains the math in detail.
| Size | mm | cm | Inches | Sheets per A0 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A0 | 841 × 1189 | 84.1 × 118.9 | 33.1 × 46.8 | 1 |
| A1 | 594 × 841 | 59.4 × 84.1 | 23.4 × 33.1 | 2 |
| A2 | 420 × 594 | 42 × 59.4 | 16.5 × 23.4 | 4 |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | 29.7 × 42 | 11.7 × 16.5 | 8 |
| A4 | 210 × 297 | 21 × 29.7 | 8.3 × 11.7 | 16 |
| A5 | 148 × 210 | 14.8 × 21 | 5.8 × 8.3 | 32 |
| A6 | 105 × 148 | 10.5 × 14.8 | 4.1 × 5.8 | 64 |
| A7 | 74 × 105 | 7.4 × 10.5 | 2.9 × 4.1 | 128 |
| A8 | 52 × 74 | 5.2 × 7.4 | 2.0 × 2.9 | 256 |
| A9 | 37 × 52 | 3.7 × 5.2 | 1.5 × 2.0 | 512 |
| A10 | 26 × 37 | 2.6 × 3.7 | 1.0 × 1.5 | 1,024 |
A3 size in inches and cm
A3 is 297 × 420 mm, which is 29.7 × 42 cm or 11.69 × 16.54 inches. It is exactly two A4 sheets side by side along the long edge. At 300 DPI an A3 file needs 3508 × 4961 pixels.
A3+ (Super A3)
A3+ is not an ISO size. It is a printer-industry format of 329 × 483 mm (13 × 19 in), the largest sheet many desktop photo printers accept. The extra margin lets you print an A3 image edge to edge and trim it, or print a 12 × 18 in photo with a border.
US and Canadian paper sizes
North American sizes grew out of traditional mill sizes, not a single formula. Letter and Legal share a width of 8.5 in, which is why a Legal sheet fits a Letter-width printer tray but needs a longer tray setting. Canada uses the same sheets; its metric P-series standard (P4 = 215 × 280 mm) is a rounded Letter and is rarely labeled as such in shops.
| Name | Inches | mm | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Letter | 8.5 × 11 | 215.9 × 279.4 | 1:1.29 |
| Legal | 8.5 × 14 | 215.9 × 355.6 | 1:1.65 |
| Tabloid (portrait) / Ledger (landscape) | 11 × 17 | 279.4 × 431.8 | 1:1.55 |
| Executive | 7.25 × 10.5 | 184.2 × 266.7 | 1:1.45 |
| Half Letter / Statement | 5.5 × 8.5 | 139.7 × 215.9 | 1:1.55 |
| Junior Legal | 5 × 8 | 127 × 203.2 | 1:1.6 |
| Folio / Government Legal | 8.5 × 13 | 215.9 × 330.2 | 1:1.53 |
The 8.5 × 13 in Folio sheet is the everyday "long" paper in the Philippines and parts of Southeast Asia, where it is sold as long bond or F4. Sheets labeled F4 vary slightly by country (210 or 215 mm wide, 330 mm long), so check the pack before setting up a print job.
A file set up for one size and printed on the other loses about 17 mm at the bottom (A4 on Letter) or 6 mm at the sides (Letter on A4). Choosing "Fit to page" in the print dialog fixes it. The A4 page lists safe margins that work on both.
B-series and C-series sizes
The B series fills the gaps between A sizes: each B sheet is the geometric mean of the A size above and below it, so B4 (250 × 353 mm) sits between A4 and A3. B sizes are used for books, passports (B7), posters (B1, B2) and some notebooks. The C series is for envelopes and is sized so an A sheet slides into the C envelope of the same number.
| Size | B series (ISO 216) | C series (ISO 269) | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 353 × 500 mm 13.9 × 19.7 in | 324 × 458 mm 12.8 × 18.0 in | C3 holds A3 flat |
| 4 | 250 × 353 mm 9.8 × 13.9 in | 229 × 324 mm 9.0 × 12.8 in | C4 holds A4 flat |
| 5 | 176 × 250 mm 6.9 × 9.8 in | 162 × 229 mm 6.4 × 9.0 in | C5 holds A5, or A4 folded once |
| 6 | 125 × 176 mm 4.9 × 6.9 in | 114 × 162 mm 4.5 × 6.4 in | C6 holds A6, or A4 folded twice |
| DL | – | 110 × 220 mm 4.3 × 8.7 in | A4 folded in thirds |
Which envelope suits which sheet, including US Letter and Legal, is covered in matching envelopes to paper sizes. For every envelope format with its numbering, see the main envelope size chart.
Japanese B sizes (JIS)
Japan uses the ISO A series but its own B series, defined in JIS P 0138, with sheets about 3% larger on each side. A notebook or copier tray labeled B5 in Japan, China or Korea is usually the JIS size.
| Size | JIS (mm) | ISO (mm) | JIS in inches |
|---|---|---|---|
| B4 | 257 × 364 | 250 × 353 | 10.12 × 14.33 |
| B5 | 182 × 257 | 176 × 250 | 7.17 × 10.12 |
| B6 | 128 × 182 | 125 × 176 | 5.04 × 7.17 |
Engineering and architectural sheet sizes
Drawings in the US use two inch-based ladders. ANSI sizes double from Letter, alternating between two aspect ratios. Architectural (Arch) sizes keep near 3:4 or 2:3 ratios and are the standard for building plans and many large-format posters.
| ANSI | Inches | mm | Arch | Inches | mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 8.5 × 11 | 216 × 279 | Arch A | 9 × 12 | 229 × 305 |
| B | 11 × 17 | 279 × 432 | Arch B | 12 × 18 | 305 × 457 |
| C | 17 × 22 | 432 × 559 | Arch C | 18 × 24 | 457 × 610 |
| D | 22 × 34 | 559 × 864 | Arch D | 24 × 36 | 610 × 914 |
| E | 34 × 44 | 864 × 1118 | Arch E | 36 × 48 | 914 × 1219 |
| Arch E1 | 30 × 42 | 762 × 1067 |
Arch C (18 × 24 in) and Arch D (24 × 36 in) are the same as two of the most popular poster sizes, so many print shops quote posters in these dimensions. See standard poster sizes for how they are used on the wall.
A sizes vs US sizes: closest equivalents
No ISO size matches a US size exactly. These are the pairs that substitute for each other in practice, with the difference that matters when you print or bind.
| ISO size | Closest US size | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| A5 (148 × 210 mm) | Half Letter (139.7 × 215.9 mm) | A5 is 8.3 mm wider, 5.9 mm shorter |
| A4 (210 × 297 mm) | Letter (215.9 × 279.4 mm) | A4 is 5.9 mm narrower, 17.6 mm taller |
| A3 (297 × 420 mm) | Tabloid (279.4 × 431.8 mm) | A3 is 17.6 mm wider, 11.8 mm shorter |
| A2 (420 × 594 mm) | ANSI C (431.8 × 558.8 mm) | A2 is 11.8 mm narrower, 35.2 mm taller |
| A1 (594 × 841 mm) | ANSI D (558.8 × 863.6 mm) | A1 is 35.2 mm wider, 22.6 mm shorter |
| A0 (841 × 1189 mm) | ANSI E (863.6 × 1117.6 mm) | A0 is 22.6 mm narrower, 71.4 mm taller |
How many sheets fit on a larger sheet
Commercial printers run jobs on big sheets and cut them down. Because each A size is half the one above, the count always doubles: two A4 on A3, four on A2, eight on A1, sixteen on A0. The same logic answers questions like "what size fits four A3 sheets" (A1) or how many A5 notebook pages come from one sheet: an A4 sheet folded once makes a 4-page A5 section, printed two pages per side.
Presses print on slightly oversize stock so the image can bleed off the edge. ISO 217 defines these untrimmed sizes: SRA3 is 320 × 450 mm and SRA4 is 225 × 320 mm, which leaves room for a 3 mm bleed plus crop marks around A3 and A4 jobs. In the US, Letter jobs with bleed are usually run on 12 × 18 in or 13 × 19 in sheets.
Paper weight: gsm vs US pounds
Paper thickness is sold by weight. The metric unit, grams per square meter (gsm), compares directly across all paper. The US pound system weighs a 500-sheet ream of a "basis size" that differs by paper type, so 20 lb bond and 50 lb text are nearly the same paper.
| gsm | US equivalent | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 75 | 20 lb bond | Standard US copy paper |
| 80 | 21 lb bond | Standard copy paper outside the US |
| 90 | 24 lb bond / 60 lb text | Better letterhead, double-sided reports |
| 120 | 32 lb bond / 80 lb text | Presentation paper, flyers |
| 176 | 65 lb cover | Light card, report covers |
| 216 | 80 lb cover | Greeting cards, invitations |
| 270 | 100 lb cover | Postcards, business cards (thin) |
To convert: bond lb × 3.76 = gsm; text lb × 1.48 = gsm; cover lb × 2.70 = gsm. Home printers differ widely in the heaviest stock they accept, and the manual or rear feed usually takes thicker card than the main tray, so check the printer's spec sheet before buying cover stock.
Choosing a paper size
- Documents for one country: use that country's office size, Letter in North America and A4 elsewhere. Mail, binders and filing cabinets are built around it.
- Documents for both markets: design on A4 or Letter with side margins of at least 20 mm and a bottom margin of at least 25 mm, so either paper prints cleanly.
- Booklets: fold the office size in half. Letter folds to 5.5 × 8.5 in and A4 folds to A5, so a home printer can make both.
- Notes and journals: A5 and B5 are the common international notebook sizes; US school notebooks use Letter or composition sizes. See the notebook size chart.
- Posters and art prints: A3 to A0 outside the US, and 11 × 17, 18 × 24 or 24 × 36 in inside it. Pixel requirements for each are in the poster print-file guide, and photo formats are in photo print sizes.
Frequently asked questions
Is A3 the same as Letter size?
No. A3 (297 × 420 mm, 11.7 × 16.5 in) is twice the size of A4 and roughly twice Letter. The US size closest to A3 is Tabloid or Ledger, 11 × 17 in (279.4 × 431.8 mm), which is 17.6 mm narrower and 11.8 mm taller than A3.
Which is bigger, A3 or B4?
A3 is bigger. ISO B4 measures 250 × 353 mm and Japanese JIS B4 measures 257 × 364 mm, both smaller than A3 (297 × 420 mm). B4 sits between A4 and A3.
What is the next paper size up from A3?
In the A series it is A2 (420 × 594 mm, 16.5 × 23.4 in), exactly twice A3. B3 (353 × 500 mm) falls between them. In US sizes, the steps above 11 × 17 in are 12 × 18 in (Arch B) and 17 × 22 in (ANSI C).
What paper size is used in Europe?
A4 (210 × 297 mm) for letters, forms and printing, A5 for notebooks and flyers, and A3 for drawings and small posters. All of Europe uses ISO 216; Letter and Legal are not stocked in ordinary shops.
What is the US equivalent of A5?
Half Letter, also called Statement (5.5 × 8.5 in, 139.7 × 215.9 mm). A5 (148 × 210 mm, 5.83 × 8.27 in) is 8 mm wider and 6 mm shorter, so the two are close but not interchangeable in a binder or planner.
Is Legal size the same as A4?
No. Legal is 8.5 × 14 in (215.9 × 355.6 mm), which is 5.9 mm wider and 58.6 mm taller than A4. A4 sits between Letter and Legal in height.
