Kids' Table Dimensions: Heights by Age, Chairs and Table Sizes
For parents, teachers and furniture makers sizing a table and chairs for children. The right height depends on the child's height more than their age, and the chair and table have to be chosen as a pair.
A kids' table should be about 18 in (46 cm) high for ages 2-4, 20-22 in (51-56 cm) for ages 4-6 and 22-24 in (56-61 cm) for ages 6-9, with chairs of about 10, 12 and 14 in (25, 30 and 36 cm). A quick rule: table height is about 0.44 × the child's height, and the seat about 0.26 ×.
- Ages 2-4
- 18 in table, 10 in chair
- Ages 4-6
- 21 in table, 12 in chair
- Ages 6-9
- 23 in table, 14 in chair

Kids' table and chair heights by age
Ages are only a guide, because children of the same age can differ by 6 in (15 cm) in height. If your child is tall or short for their age, use the height column.
| Age | Child's height | Chair seat height | Table height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 months-2 years | 31-36 in (80-92 cm) | 8 in (20 cm) | 16 in (40 cm) |
| 2-4 years | 34-41 in (86-104 cm) | 10 in (25 cm) | 18 in (46 cm) |
| 4-6 years | 40-47 in (102-119 cm) | 12 in (30 cm) | 20-22 in (51-56 cm) |
| 6-9 years | 45-54 in (114-137 cm) | 14 in (36 cm) | 22-24 in (56-61 cm) |
| 9-12 years | 52-61 in (132-155 cm) | 15-16 in (38-41 cm) | 25-26 in (64-66 cm) |
| 12+ years | 57 in+ (145 cm+) | 17-18 in (43-46 cm) | 28-30 in (71-76 cm), adult height |
The gap between the seat and the tabletop grows with the child: about 8 in (20 cm) for toddlers, 9-10 in for school-age children and 11-12 in for adults. That is why a toddler chair pushed up to a "big kid" table, or the reverse, never feels right even when one of the two is the correct height.
A quick formula
Measure the child's height without shoes. Table height ≈ height × 0.44, chair seat height ≈ height × 0.26. For a 42 in (107 cm) child: table 18.5 in (47 cm), seat 10.9 in (28 cm). These ratios come from the school furniture sizes below and work to within about an inch for ages 2 to 14.
The European school furniture standard (EN 1729)
EN 1729-1 sets matched chair and table heights for schools in Europe, sorted into size marks by the child's height. Each size has a color code, which you will see on classroom chairs and tables. It is the most widely used published reference for children's furniture heights and a good basis for buying at home.
| Size mark (color) | Child's height | Seat height | Table height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (white) | 80-95 cm (31.5-37.4 in) | 210 mm (8.3 in) | 400 mm (15.7 in) |
| 1 (orange) | 93-116 cm (36.6-45.7 in) | 260 mm (10.2 in) | 460 mm (18.1 in) |
| 2 (violet) | 108-121 cm (42.5-47.6 in) | 310 mm (12.2 in) | 530 mm (20.9 in) |
| 3 (yellow) | 119-142 cm (46.9-55.9 in) | 350 mm (13.8 in) | 590 mm (23.2 in) |
| 4 (red) | 133-159 cm (52.4-62.6 in) | 380 mm (15.0 in) | 640 mm (25.2 in) |
| 5 (green) | 146-176.5 cm (57.5-69.5 in) | 430 mm (16.9 in) | 710 mm (28.0 in) |
| 6 (blue) | 159-188 cm (62.6-74.0 in) | 460 mm (18.1 in) | 760 mm (29.9 in) |
The ranges overlap on purpose, so a child near a boundary can use either size. In a kindergarten room, sizes 1 and 2 cover almost every child; primary classrooms use sizes 2 to 4. For "kids table scale in mm" or making your own furniture, these millimeter figures are the ones to build to.
How to check a table fits the child
- Feet flat on the floor with the knees bent at about a right angle. Dangling feet mean the chair is too high.
- Thigh clearance: 2-3 in (5-8 cm) between the top of the thighs and the underside of the table or its apron. Toddler tables with deep aprons often fail this.
- Elbows level with or slightly above the tabletop when the arms hang relaxed and bend to 90°. If the shoulders hunch up to write, the table is too high.
- Seat depth: the child should sit back against the backrest with 2-3 finger widths between the front edge of the seat and the back of the knee.
Tables with telescoping legs, common in classroom furniture, adjust in 1 in (2.5 cm) steps over a range such as 16-24 in or 19-30 in. One table then covers ages 2 to 8, and only the chairs need replacing.
Kids' table top sizes and seating
Children need less elbow room than adults: about 18 in (46 cm) of table edge per preschooler and 20-24 in (51-61 cm) per school-age child, against 24 in for an adult.
| Top | Inches | Centimeters | Preschoolers | School-age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small square | 24 × 24 | 61 × 61 | 2-4 | 2 |
| Rectangle | 24 × 36 | 61 × 91 | 4 | 4 |
| Rectangle | 24 × 48 | 61 × 122 | 6 | 4-6 |
| Classroom rectangle | 30 × 60 | 76 × 152 | 8 | 6 |
| Round | 36 diameter | 91 diameter | 4-5 | 4 |
| Round | 48 diameter | 122 diameter | 6-8 | 6 |
| Kidney / horseshoe | 48 × 72 | 122 × 183 | 6 + teacher | 6 + teacher |
Leave about 24-30 in (61-76 cm) behind each chair so children can get in and out. A 24 × 48 in table with chairs on all sides therefore needs a clear area of about 6 × 8 ft (1.8 × 2.4 m). For one child drawing alone, a 24 × 24 in table against a wall needs only about 3 × 4 ft.
Kids' picnic tables
Outdoor kids' picnic tables come with the benches attached, so the table and seat heights are fixed. Most are sized for ages 2 to 8.
| Measurement | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| Tabletop height | 20-21 | 51-53 |
| Bench height | 11-12 | 28-30 |
| Top length | 32-48 | 81-122 |
| Overall width with benches | 35-40 | 89-102 |
| Seats | 4 children (32-36 in top) to 6 (48 in top) | |
The 9 in (23 cm) seat-to-top gap suits children of about 38-48 in. Children over about age 8 sit with their knees jammed under the top. Adult picnic tables are about 29-30 in high with 17-18 in benches, so a family of mixed ages usually needs both. See picnic table dimensions for adult sizes.
Desks and activity tables for older children
From about age 7, a child doing homework needs a desk rather than a play table. Use the 9-12 years row above for height (about 25 in, 64 cm), and a top at least 36 × 20 in (91 × 51 cm) to fit a laptop or open notebook plus elbows. Adjustable children's desks typically span about 21-30 in, which covers ages 5 to adult. General desk sizes are in the desk dimensions guide.
For the stage before a kids' table, see high chair sizes. A table often ends up beside a play kitchen in the playroom, and the full range of children's furniture, including beds and storage, is in the kids' furniture guide.
Frequently asked questions
What size table for a child who is 38 inches tall?
A table about 17-18 in (43-46 cm) high with a 10 in (25 cm) chair. A 38 in (97 cm) child falls in EN 1729 size 1 (93-116 cm), which pairs a 26 cm seat with a 46 cm table.
What is the standard table height for 3-year-old preschool tables?
About 18-20 in (46-51 cm), paired with 10-12 in (25-30 cm) chairs. Many classrooms buy adjustable-leg tables so the same top can be set at 16-24 in as children grow.
What table height suits a 5 or 6 year old?
Around 20-22 in (51-56 cm), with a 12 in (30 cm) chair. A tall 6-year-old (over about 47 in or 120 cm) is ready for a 22-24 in table and 14 in chair.
What is the table height for kids aged 8?
About 22-24 in (56-61 cm) with a 14 in (36 cm) chair for an average 8-year-old (about 50 in or 127 cm tall). Taller 8-year-olds may need 25 in (64 cm) and a 15 in seat.
How big a table do six children need?
A rectangle of 24 × 48 in (61 × 122 cm) seats six preschoolers, two on each long side and one at each end. For school-age children, 30 × 60 in (76 × 152 cm) or a 48 in (122 cm) round table gives each child about 20-24 in of edge.
How big is a kids' picnic table?
Most kids' picnic tables have a tabletop about 20-21 in (51-53 cm) high and 32-48 in (81-122 cm) long, with attached benches about 11-12 in (28-30 cm) high. Overall width with benches is usually 35-40 in (89-102 cm), and they seat four to six children aged 2-8.
