Table dimensions by type
Table heights are fixed by the seat in front of them, so they cluster tightly. Top sizes vary more and depend on how many people the table serves.

The dedicated guides go deeper on the most common tables: dining table sizes by seat count, coffee table sizes and the two-thirds rule, nightstand dimensions and desk sizes, including standing desk heights.
Standard table heights
Each table height pairs with a seat height, leaving 10-12 in (25-30 cm) between seat and tabletop for legs at dining, counter and bar height. Low tables pair with the seat itself.
| Height class | Table height | Seat used with it |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee | 16-18 in 41-46 cm | Sofa, 17-19 in seat |
| End and side | 22-28 in 56-71 cm | Level with the sofa or chair arm |
| Standard (dining, desk) | 28-30 in 71-76 cm | Chair, 17-19 in 43-48 cm |
| Counter | 34-36 in 86-91 cm | Counter stool, 24-26 in 61-66 cm |
| Bar | 40-42 in 102-107 cm | Bar stool, 28-30 in 71-76 cm |
| Standing work | about 38-48 in 97-122 cm | None; set to the user's elbow height |
Europe uses the same classes with metric targets: about 75 cm for dining tables, 90 cm for counter height and 105-110 cm for bar tables. Outdoor tables follow the indoor heights for dining and bar, while outdoor coffee and side tables run a little lower to suit deep, low lounge seats. Stool sizes for counter and bar tables are in the bar stool guide.
How table sizes are written
- "48 round" or "48 in round": a round top 48 in (122 cm) in diameter.
- "72 × 36" or "36 × 72": length and width of a rectangle. Retailers put length first in most listings, but furniture drawings sometimes put width first; the larger number is the length.
- "6 ft table" or "8 ft table": folding and banquet tables are named by length. A 6 ft table is 72 in, an 8 ft table 96 in, both usually 30 in wide.
- "Seats 6": the maker's count, usually at 24 in per person with armless chairs. Treat it as a maximum for everyday use.
- "Extends to 96 in": the length with all leaves fitted. The room has to take that length plus about 36 in of chair space at each end.
- W × D × H: for consoles, end tables and desks, width is the long side, depth front to back, and height to the top surface.
Folding and banquet table sizes
Folding tables come in a short list of standard sizes, which makes event planning straightforward. Heights are about 29-30 in (74-76 cm), the same as a dining table.
| Table | Size (in) | Size (cm) | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 ft rectangular | 48 × 24 | 122 × 61 | 4 |
| 6 ft rectangular | 72 × 30 | 183 × 76 | 6, or 8 with ends |
| 8 ft rectangular | 96 × 30 | 244 × 76 | 8, or 10 with ends |
| 6 ft or 8 ft seminar (classroom) | 72 or 96 × 18 | 183 or 244 × 46 | 3 or 4, one side only |
| 48 in round | 48 diameter | 122 | 4-6 |
| 60 in round | 60 diameter | 152 | 8 |
| 72 in round | 72 diameter | 183 | 10 |
| Card table | about 34 square | about 86 square | 4 |
For a seated event, allow roughly 10-12 sq ft (0.9-1.1 m²) per guest with round tables, which covers the table, chairs and aisles. Leave at least 60 in (152 cm) between the edges of neighboring round tables so chairs back to back still leave a path. Tablecloth drops for each size are in the tablecloth size guide.
A 6 ft table with a 15 in drop needs a 60 × 102 in cloth (30 + 2 × 15 by 72 + 2 × 15). A floor-length cloth on a 30 in high table needs a 29-30 in drop on each side.
Conference and meeting table sizes
Meeting tables use the same 24-30 in per person as dining tables, but are wider so that laptops and papers fit, and the room needs more space behind chairs because people swivel and roll back.
| Length | Width | Seats | Minimum room (42 in clearance) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft 183 cm | 36-42 in | 4-6 | about 10.5 × 13 ft |
| 8 ft 244 cm | 42-48 in | 6-8 | about 11 × 15 ft |
| 10 ft 305 cm | 42-48 in | 8-10 | about 11 × 17 ft |
| 12 ft 366 cm | 48-54 in | 10-12 | about 11.5 × 19 ft |
| 16 ft 488 cm | 54-60 in | 14-16 | about 12 × 23 ft |
The room sizes allow 42 in (107 cm) from the table edge to the wall on every side, the minimum for rolling office chairs with a walkway behind them. At 48 in (122 cm), which is more comfortable, add 1 ft to each room dimension. Office chair sizes are in the office chair guide.
Console, entry and accent tables
Console tables are the narrow tables of the house. Their depth is the figure that matters, because they usually stand in a hall or behind a sofa.
- Entry console: 10-16 in (25-41 cm) deep and 30-34 in (76-86 cm) high. In a 42 in hallway, a 12 in deep console leaves 30 in to walk.
- Sofa table: as long as or a little shorter than the sofa, 12-18 in deep, and at or just under the height of the sofa back, typically 26-32 in.
- Accent or drink table: 12-16 in across, 20-24 in high, for a spot beside a chair where an end table will not fit.
- Wall-mounted drop-leaf table: 24-36 in wide, folding to 6-10 in deep; at dining height when open.
Outdoor, picnic and specialty tables
Several table types have their own standards and guides:
- Picnic tables: the classic 6 ft table with attached benches seats six to eight. See picnic table dimensions.
- Patio dining tables: same seat counts as indoor tables, often with an umbrella hole. See patio furniture sizes.
- Pool tables: named by playing area (7, 8 or 9 ft) and need a large room for cue clearance. See pool table sizes.
- Children's tables: sized by age, from 18 in high for toddlers. See the kids table guide.
Clearances for every room, including the space a table needs around it, are in the furniture dimensions guide.
Frequently asked questions
What does 48 round mean for a table?
It means a round table 48 in (122 cm) in diameter. A 48 in round seats four comfortably or six with compact chairs, since its edge is about 151 in around.
What is a typical table size in cm?
A 4-seat dining table is about 120 × 80 cm, a 6-seat table 160-180 × 90 cm, and both are about 75 cm high. Coffee tables are around 120 × 60 cm and 40-45 cm high; desks are 120-150 × 60-75 cm.
What is the typical size of an end table?
18-24 in (46-61 cm) square or round, and 22-28 in (56-71 cm) high so the top sits within 2 in of the sofa arm. Narrow C-shaped side tables that slide under a sofa are 12-18 in wide.
What size is a 6 ft folding table?
72 × 30 in (183 × 76 cm), about 29 in high. It seats six, three per side, or eight with one person at each end.
How tall is an outdoor table?
Outdoor dining tables use the same 28-30 in (71-76 cm) height as indoor ones. Outdoor bar-height tables are 40-42 in, coffee tables for deep seating 14-18 in, and side tables beside lounge chairs about 18-22 in, lower than indoor end tables because outdoor seats sit lower.
What is the standard size of a small table?
A small table for two is 24-30 in (61-76 cm) round or 30 × 30 in (76 × 76 cm) square at dining height. Small accent and side tables are 12-24 in across.
