Strollers sold in the US must meet ASTM F833, the standard adopted in 16 CFR Part 1227. It covers stability, brakes and restraints but sets no dimensions, so the numbers vary by model. The ranges above cover most current strollers; the spec sheet for the model you want is the final word.

The cabin-size row uses the Babyzen YOYO's published fold of 52 × 44 × 18 cm, which is a common reference size for strollers designed to go in an overhead bin. Many full-size strollers fold only if the seat is removed first; the folded size listed is often for the frame alone.

Folded size vs trunk space

Volume is misleading for trunks. A compact sedan advertises 13-15 cu ft, about twice a full-size stroller's folded volume, yet the stroller can still fail to fit because the trunk opening is short or the floor is only about 20 in deep behind the wheel arches. Before buying:

Measure the trunk floor width between the wheel arches and depth from the lip to the seat back.
Measure the opening height at the lip, the narrowest point for a stroller loaded on its side.
Compare with the folded length and width, not the volume. A 32 in folded length needs a floor at least that wide or deep in one direction.
Leave room for the rest: groceries and a diaper bag (about 16 × 6 × 12 in) usually go in at the same time.

Stroller width vs doorways, aisles and elevators

A door's nominal size is the width of the door slab. The clear opening is about 2 in less, because the open door and the stop take up space. Strollers have to fit the clear opening.

Door sizes in more detail are on the door dimensions page. For apartment living, a stroller of 25 in or less keeps every doorway, elevator and hallway usable; a side-by-side double is the type that most often gets stuck.

Planning dimensions for architects and designers

For stroller parking, lobbies and storage rooms, plan a parked single at 24 × 40 in (61 × 102 cm) and a parked double at 31 × 42 in (79 × 107 cm), with a 36 in (91 cm) access aisle. For turning, the 60 in (1525 mm) circle used for wheelchairs in the ADA Standards also covers a single or double stroller. A folded stroller stored upright needs a closet or alcove about 24 in wide, 18 in deep and 36-42 in tall.

Stroller seat, basket and wheel sizes

Seat dimensions

Typical single seats are 11-13 in (28-33 cm) wide inside and 18-22 in (46-56 cm) from the seat surface to the top of the backrest. Seats sold as XL run about 13-15 in wide and up to 24 in tall. A child near the top of the weight range (usually 45-50 lb, around age 4) fills a narrow seat at the hips and shoulders, so measure the seat if the stroller has to last that long.

Storage basket

Baskets range from about 10 × 8 in on umbrella strollers to 20 × 14 in on full-size models, with load limits of about 10-25 lb printed on the basket or in the manual. The usable size is the gap under the seat in its most reclined position, which is often half the advertised height. A full diaper bag fits in the larger baskets only.

Wheel sizes and how to read them

Small plastic or foam wheels: 5-7 in (13-18 cm) diameter on umbrella and travel strollers. Fine on pavement, poor on grass and gravel.
Foam-filled or rubber wheels: 7-12 in on full-size strollers, often smaller at the front.
Air tires: 12 in and 16 in are common on joggers and all-terrain strollers. A tire marked 12½ × 2¼ is about 12.5 in in diameter and 2.25 in wide. The same tire's ETRTO code, 62-203, gives the width (62 mm) and rim seat diameter (203 mm), which is what to match for a replacement tube.

Choosing a stroller size

Go smaller (under 20 in wide, under 17 lb) if

You use public transport, stairs or an elevator daily
Your car is a small hatchback or sedan
You fly often and want a fold under about 52 × 44 × 18 cm

Go full-size (22-25 in) if

You walk long distances on rough sidewalks
You want a bassinet or car-seat travel system from birth
You need a large basket for shopping

Newborns need either a lie-flat bassinet or an infant car seat that clicks into the frame. Adaptive (special-needs) strollers

Strollers that bridge to a wheelchair for older children are sized by the child rather than by age. Measure hip width (add about 1 in for clothing), seat to top of shoulder, and back of hip to back of knee, then compare with the seat width, back height and seat depth on the spec sheet. Their frames are usually wider and heavier than a standard stroller, so check the door and trunk tables above against the actual model.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is a double stroller?

Side-by-side doubles are usually 29-31 in (74-79 cm) wide, and a few compact models are 26-28 in. Tandem (one behind the other) doubles are about the width of a single, 21-25 in, but 40-50 in long.

Will a stroller fit through a standard door?

Single strollers, at 25 in or less, fit through any normal door. A 30 in side-by-side double needs about 30 in of clear opening, and a door sold as 32 in wide gives only about 30 in clear once the door and stop take their share, so it is a squeeze. A 36 in front door (about 34 in clear) takes any stroller.

How do I read stroller wheel sizes?

Air tires use bicycle-style markings. 12½ × 2¼ means about 12.5 in overall diameter and a 2.25 in wide tire; the ETRTO code for the same tire, 62-203, means 62 mm wide on a 203 mm rim. Foam or plastic wheels are usually listed only by diameter, for example 7 in front and 11 in rear.

How do I measure the diameter of a stroller wheel?

Stand the stroller up and measure straight across the wheel through the center of the axle, from the outer edge of the tire on one side to the outer edge on the other. Inflate air tires to the listed pressure first.

How big is a stroller seat?
