Shoe Size Chart: UK, EU and US Conversions with Foot Length
Convert any adult shoe size between UK, European and US systems, or work out your size from a foot measurement. The chart below is built from the published sizing formulas, so every row is consistent; the notes explain where brands drift from it.
A UK shoe size is about 1 size smaller than US men's and 2 sizes smaller than US women's: UK 8 = US men's 9 = US women's 10. EU sizes run about 33-34 above UK, so UK 8 is EU 42. That size fits a foot about 26.2 cm (10.3 in) long.

Find your size in any column and read across. Foot length is the length of the bare foot from heel to the longest toe, measured standing. The shoe itself is longer: makers add about 1.5-2 cm of room inside.

The EU column converts last length to last length, which is how both systems were defined. Where the exact result falls between two EU labels, both are shown: brands round in different directions, so a UK 7 is sold as EU 40.5 by some makers and EU 41 by others.
EU to UK and US shoe sizes
European sizes go up in whole numbers, so EU shoppers usually search from the EU side. Each EU size is ⅔ cm longer than the one before, which is smaller than a UK or US full size (⅓ in, or 8.5 mm). That mismatch is why a single EU size can map to a half size on the UK scale.
| EU | UK | US men's | US women's | Foot length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 35 | 2.5 | 3.5 | 4.5 | 21.6 cm / 8.5 in |
| 36 | 3.5 | 4.5 | 5.5 | 22.3 cm / 8.8 in |

| 40 | 6.5 | 7.5 | 8.5 | 25.0 cm / 9.8 in |
| 41 | 7-7.5 | 8-8.5 | 9-9.5 | 25.6 cm / 10.1 in |
| 42 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 26.3 cm / 10.3 in |

Quick checks for common searches: UK 6 is EU 39, UK 7 is EU 40.5-41, UK 9 is EU 43, UK 10 is EU 44.5 and UK 12 is EU 47. Going the other way, EU 40 is UK 6.5, EU 42 is UK 8 and EU 44 is UK 9.5-10.
How the three systems work
Knowing the units explains every odd jump in the charts. All three systems number the length of the last (the foot-shaped form a shoe is built on), not the foot.
- UK: one size = 1 barleycorn = ⅓ in (8.47 mm). Adult size 1 starts at a last of 8⅔ in. In foot terms, ISO/TS 19407 gives UK size = 3 × foot length in inches − 23.
- US men's: the same ⅓-inch step, but numbered one size higher than UK. The Brannock Device, the steel measuring plate used in US shoe stores, reads men's size 1 at a foot length of 7⅔ in (195 mm).
- US women's: the Brannock scale sets women's at men's + 1, so women's = UK + 2. Many US brands use men's + 1.5 instead, which makes women's = UK + 2.5. Check the brand's chart if you are converting from UK.
- EU (Paris point): one size = ⅔ cm (6.67 mm). EU size = 1.5 × last length in cm. Because the last is about 1.7 cm longer than the foot, EU size is roughly 1.5 × foot length in cm + 2.5. ISO/TS 19407 uses + 2, which comes out about half an EU size smaller.
- Mondopoint and Japan: the size is simply the foot length in mm (Mondopoint, ISO 9407) or cm (Japan, China, Korea). A 265 Mondopoint or JP 26.5 fits a 26.5 cm foot, which is a UK 8.5.
UK and US steps are 8.47 mm; EU steps are 6.67 mm. Five EU sizes (33.3 mm) come close to four UK sizes (33.9 mm), so the two scales only line up every few sizes. Any chart that shows a clean one-to-one EU and UK match has rounded somewhere.
Shoe size from foot length in cm or inches
If you have a measurement and no chart, these formulas give the size directly. If the result lands clearly between two half sizes, take the larger one.
| System | Formula | Example: 10.5 in (26.7 cm) foot |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 3 × inches − 23 | 8.5 |
| US men's | 3 × inches − 22 | 9.5 |
| US women's | 3 × inches − 21 (−20.5 for brands using +1.5) | 10.5 (11) |
| EU | 1.5 × cm + 2.5 | 42.5 |
| Mondopoint / JP | foot length in mm / cm | 265 / 26.5 |
Worked examples for common searches: a 25 cm (9.84 in) foot gives UK 6.5, EU 40, US men's 7.5 and US women's 8.5. A 28 cm (11.02 in) foot gives UK 10, EU 44.5 and US men's 11. A UK 7 corresponds to a 25.4 cm (10 in) foot and a UK 9 to 27.1 cm (10.67 in).
How to measure your foot for shoe size
- Measure late in the day. Feet swell during the day, typically by a few millimeters. Wear the socks you plan to wear with the shoes.
- Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall and your weight spread evenly. Mark the tip of your longest toe; for many people that is the second toe.
- Measure from the wall to the mark in cm or inches. Do both feet and use the longer one.
- Find the foot length in the chart. If you fall between two rows, choose the larger size.
- Measure the width across the widest part of the forefoot (the ball joints) if you often find shoes tight at the sides. See the width chart below.
A correctly sized shoe leaves about 1-1.5 cm (½ in, roughly a thumb's width) between the longest toe and the end of the shoe while you stand. Running shoes and hiking boots need the upper end of that range because the foot slides forward on descents.
Men's vs women's shoe sizes
Men's and women's shoes use the same length scale with different numbers. A women's US 8 and a men's US 6.5 fit roughly the same foot length (on the common men's + 1.5 rule). In UK and EU sizing there is no separate women's scale: a UK 6 is a UK 6 for anyone.
| US women's | US men's (common, +1.5) | US men's (Brannock, +1) | UK |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 4.5 | 5 | 3.5-4 |
| 7 | 5.5 | 6 | 4.5-5 |
| 8 | 6.5 | 7 | 5.5-6 |
| 9 | 7.5 | 8 | 6.5-7 |
| 10 | 8.5 | 9 | 7.5-8 |
| 11 | 9.5 | 10 | 8.5-9 |
| 12 | 10.5 | 11 | 9.5-10 |
Women's lasts are usually narrower at the heel and forefoot for the same length. A woman with wide feet often fits men's shoes better; a man with narrow feet may fit women's or "narrow" men's styles. The insole guide covers how to take up extra volume when a shoe is long enough but too roomy.
Shoe width sizes
Length and width are separate. Width letters describe the girth around the ball of the foot, and each step adds about 3/16 in (5 mm) in width. An unlettered US shoe is a D for men and a B for women.
| Width | Men's | Women's |
|---|---|---|
| Extra narrow | 2A (AA) | 4A (AAAA) |
| Narrow | B | 2A (AA) |
| Standard / medium | D | B |
| Wide | 2E (EE) | D |
| Extra wide | 4E (EEEE) | 2E (EE) |
UK makers use a different letter scale: F is the usual men's standard, G wide and H extra wide; women's standard is typically D, with E and EE for wide fits. Mondopoint marks width directly in mm as a second number, so "270/100" is a 270 mm foot with a 100 mm forefoot.
Shoe sizes in other countries
| System | How it is numbered | Equivalent of UK 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Japan, China, Korea | Foot length in cm or mm | 26-26.5 (cm) or 260-265 (mm) |
| Mondopoint (ISO 9407) | Foot length in mm | 260-265 |
| Australia, New Zealand | Men's usually UK numbers; women's vary by brand, often near US women's | Men's 8; women's about 10 |
| Brazil | Paris point, about 2 below EU | About 40 |
| France, Italy, Germany, Spain | EU (Paris point) | 42 |
Lasts differ between brands and even between models from one brand, so the same labeled size can vary by about half a size in length. Treat any conversion as the starting point and check the maker's own foot-length chart when one is published.
Common shoe sizing mistakes
- Treating the size number as a length. A US 10 is not 10 inches. It fits a foot about 10.7 in (27.1 cm) long and the shoe is longer still.
- Converting women's US to UK by subtracting 1. That rule is for men. Women's US is 2 (or 2.5) above UK, so a women's US 8 is a UK 5.5-6, not a UK 7.
- Using shoe size for boots and sandals unchanged. Winter and work boots are often worn with thick socks and may need half a size more; open sandals can often go half a size down. See the boot size guide and sandal size guide.
- Assuming one foot. Left and right feet commonly differ by a few millimeters. Fit the larger one.
- Ignoring width. A shoe that is tight across the ball but has space at the toe needs a wider fit, not a longer size.
For children's sizes (toddler C sizes and youth Y sizes) see the kids' shoe size chart. For sock ranges that match each shoe size, see the sock size chart; flip-flop and slipper S/M/L ranges are on the flip-flop and slipper pages. Shoe box dimensions by size are on the shoe box page.
Frequently asked questions
What UK shoe size is 26 cm?
A 26 cm foot sits between UK 7.5 (25.8 cm) and UK 8 (26.2 cm). Choose UK 8 (EU 42, US men's 9) so the shoe has room. If you are between sizes, the larger size plus a thicker insole fits better than a shoe that is too short.
Is EU 45 a UK 9 or 10?
Neither exactly. EU 45 converts to about UK 10.5 on the standard scale; brands label it UK 10 or 10.5. UK 9 is EU 43.
Is size 39 the same as a women's US 7?
Close. EU 39 converts to about UK 5.5-6, which is US women's 7.5-8 on the standard scale. Brands that use US women's = UK + 2.5 label EU 39 as US 8.
Are UK shoe sizes measured in inches?
UK and US sizes come from an old inch-based unit, the barleycorn (⅓ inch). Each full size adds ⅓ in (8.5 mm) of length, but the size number is not the foot length itself. A UK 9 fits a foot about 10.7 in (27.1 cm) long.
How do I convert US men's to US women's shoe sizes?
Add 1.5 for most brands: a men's 8 is about a women's 9.5. The original Brannock scale adds 1, which is why some charts show men's 8 = women's 9. Unisex sneakers are usually labeled in men's sizes.
What does a shoe size like 8 E or 8 2E mean?
The number is the length and the letter is the width. In US men's sizing D is standard, 2E (EE) is wide and 4E is extra wide. In women's sizing B is standard and D is wide. Each width step adds about 3/16 in (5 mm) across the ball of the foot.
