How to size yoga blocks
Match the equipment to body and space
Standard yoga block: 9″×6″×4″. 3″ thick: easier to grip, suits smaller hands. 4″ thick: more elevation, suits beginners and floor-pose support. Cork: heavier, denser, very stable. Foam: light, soft, less stable for weight-bearing poses.
Floor space and ceiling clearance
Most home gym equipment lists a footprint, but the "operating envelope" — the area you actually need around it — is larger. Two blocks per practitioner is the standard recommendation — most asana sequences that use blocks ask for one under each hand. Sized to fit any standard yoga mat.
Progression and storage
Cork blocks last decades but cost 2–3× foam. Foam blocks compress and dent over time, especially when stood on. Hard EVA foam is the most durable foam variant.
Common mistakes
- Buying the equipment first and discovering you have nowhere to put it; measure first.
- Ignoring ceiling height for overhead movements (presses, pull-ups, jump rope).
- Skipping flooring — concrete and hard floors damage equipment and increase noise; budget for mats.
