Watch Box Sizes: Footprint by Number of Slots, Compartments and Lid Clearance
For anyone buying a watch box, roll or travel case: how big each slot count is overall, whether large or thick watches will fit, and how to check before ordering.
A watch box compartment is typically 2 to 2.5 in wide and 3.5 to 4.5 in long (5 to 6.4 × 9 to 11.5 cm), enough for cases up to about 45 mm. Overall, a 6-slot box in two rows is about 7 to 9 in wide and 8 to 10 in deep, and a 12-slot box in two rows about 13 to 16 × 8 to 10 in. Single-layer boxes stand 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) tall.

Watch box dimensions by number of slots
A box's footprint follows from its layout: number of rows times compartment length one way, and slots per row times compartment width the other, plus about 1 in (2.5 cm) for walls. The ranges below assume 2 to 2.5 in wide and 3.5 to 4.5 in long compartments, which covers most boxes sold.
| Slots | Layout | Width × depth (in) | Width × depth (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 × 1 | 3-3.5 × 4.5-5.5 | 8-9 × 11-14 |
| 2 | 1 row of 2 | 5-6 × 4.5-5.5 | 13-15 × 11-14 |
| 3 | 1 row of 3 | 7-9 × 4.5-5.5 | 18-23 × 11-14 |
| 4 | 1 row of 4 | 9-11 × 4.5-5.5 | 23-28 × 11-14 |
| 6 | 2 rows of 3 | 7-9 × 8-10 | 18-23 × 20-25 |
| 6 | 1 row of 6 | 13-16 × 4.5-5.5 | 33-41 × 11-14 |
| 8 | 2 rows of 4 | 9-11 × 8-10 | 23-28 × 20-25 |
| 10 | 2 rows of 5 | 11-14 × 8-10 | 28-36 × 20-25 |
| 12 | 2 rows of 6 | 13-16 × 8-10 | 33-41 × 20-25 |
| 20 to 24 | Two layers, or drawers | 14-16 × 9-11, 6-9 in tall | 36-41 × 23-28, 15-23 tall |
Single-layer boxes are usually 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) tall with the lid closed. Two-layer and drawer boxes run 6 to 9 in (15 to 23 cm). A 12-slot box fits on most dresser tops; a 24-slot chest usually needs a shelf or a drawer of its own.
Compartment sizes and which watches fit
The width that matters is the case diameter plus the crown, which sticks out 3 to 5 mm on most watches. Length rarely limits fit, because the strap curls around the pillow.
| Case diameter | Width with crown | Slot width needed |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 40 mm | About 43 to 45 mm | 1.8 in (46 mm) or more |
| 41 to 44 mm | About 45 to 49 mm | 2 in (51 mm) or more |
| 45 to 47 mm | About 49 to 52 mm | 2.25 in (57 mm) or more |
| 48 mm and up, or crown guards | 52 mm and up | 2.5 in (64 mm), or an oversize box |
For reference, a Casio G-Shock DW-5600 measures 48.9 × 42.8 × 13.4 mm, and its 42.8 mm width sits across a slot comfortably even though its length is close to 49 mm. Case sizes for common watches are listed in the watch size guide.
Thick watches are the most common fit problem. Measure the gap between the top of a pillow and the closed lid in the listing or product photos, or ask the seller. It must exceed your thickest case: most divers are 12 to 15 mm, G-Shocks and deep-rated divers 15 to 18 mm or more.
Watch pillows: getting the fit right
Each watch wraps around a removable cushion. A pillow that is too large stretches a leather strap or will not pass through a closed bracelet; one that is too small lets the watch flop over.
- Close the strap or bracelet at the hole or link you wear it on.
- Slide it over the pillow. It should go on with light pressure and sit with the dial facing up, not tilted.
- If it is too tight, the strap is sized for a smaller wrist than the pillow. Store it on the next hole, or use a smaller pillow. Small women's watches and bracelets sized for wrists under about 6 in often need smaller pillows.
- If it is too loose, wrap the pillow in a soft cloth or choose a larger pillow so the watch does not rotate.
Watch rolls, travel cases and winders
| Type | Holds | Typical size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watch roll | 1 to 4 watches | About 8 to 12 in long, 3 to 3.5 in across rolled | Each watch on its own pillow, separated by dividers |
| Zip travel case | 1 to 3 watches | About 4 to 9 in long, 4 to 5 in wide, 3 in tall | Rigid shell protects against crushing in a bag |
| Single watch winder | 1 automatic watch | About 5 to 8 in on each side | Needs power and space for the door to open |
| Multi-watch winder cabinet | 4 to 12 watches | About 12 to 20 in wide | Often combined with storage drawers |
A watch roll or zip case fits easily in a laptop bag or carry-on; see the carry-on bag size guide. Valuable collections at home are often kept in a safe; if the watch box is going inside one, measure the safe's interior height and shelf depth before buying.
Choosing a watch box size
- Slot count: your current collection plus two to four spare slots.
- Slot width: at least the width of your largest watch with its crown, per the table above.
- Lid clearance: more than your thickest watch.
- Mixed jewelry: boxes with a watch tray on top and a drawer below for rings and cufflinks save dresser space. Compartment sizes for jewelry are in the jewelry box guide.
- Display: glass-lid boxes show the collection but let light fade leather straps over time. A closed lid, or a separate display case away from windows, avoids that.
- Smartwatches: they fit standard slots, and charging docks fit in a slot of their own; sizes are in the smartwatch size guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average watch box size?
The most common boxes hold 6 to 12 watches in two rows. A 6-slot box is about 7 to 9 in wide, 8 to 10 in deep and 3 to 4 in tall; a 10-slot box about 11 to 14 in wide with the same depth and height.
Will a 46 mm watch fit in a watch box?
Usually, if the compartments are at least 2 in (51 mm) wide. A 46 mm case plus a crown of 3 to 5 mm measures about 49 to 51 mm across, so 2 in slots are a tight fit and 2.25 in (57 mm) slots are comfortable. Check the compartment width in the listing.
How tall should a watch box be for thick watches?
Check the space between the top of the pillow and the underside of the closed lid. It must be more than your thickest watch: about 0.6 in (15 mm) for most divers, and 0.7 in (18 mm) or more for G-Shocks and deep-rated divers. Shallow glass-top boxes are often the problem.
How many slots should my watch box have?
Count your watches, add two to four for watches you will buy, and leave out the one you wear daily if it lives on a dresser tray. Many collectors outgrow a box within a few years, so a 10 or 12 slot box is a common choice for a collection of six or seven.
Do smartwatches fit in a watch box?
Yes. A 46 mm Apple Watch case is 46 × 39 × 9.7 mm, smaller in width than many analog watches, and fits a standard slot. Sport bands that do not close into a loop sit better laid flat or around a pillow sized for the band.
