How to size a washing machine
Measure the cutout, not the existing unit
Standard cabinet cutout: 27″ W × 28″ D × 36″ H for full-size top-load and front-load washers. Compact units: 24″ W. Verify the door-swing on front-loaders — left- or right-hinge matters for stacking and laundry-room flow. Plumbing connections eat 4–5″ of depth in the back.
Plumbing and electrical reduce usable depth
Supply lines, drains, vent ducts, and electrical run in the back 3–4″ of most cabinets. The catalog dimension assumes those connections sit flush against the back wall. If a previous installation routed lines along the side, the new unit may not fit even though the cutout looks correct. Pull the existing unit before ordering to confirm.
Standard vs. compact sizing
Compact (24″): 1.6–2.7 cu ft drum. Standard (27″): 4–4.5 cu ft top-load, 4.2–5.0 cu ft front-load. Large capacity: 5.0–6.0 cu ft front-load. Match drum capacity to typical load size and household.
Common mistakes
- Assuming all "standard" units in the same category are interchangeable. Cabinet height varies by 1–2″ between brands.
- Adding new flooring under the existing unit; the new layer traps the unit under the counter.
- Ignoring door swing or pull-out clearance in front of the unit.
- Mixing US and EU standards. EU appliances are sized in centimetres (60 cm ≈ 23.6″), not 24″.
Installation Requirements
Door Clearances
Standard doorway: 32-36 inches. Washer width: up to 29 inches fits through standard doors. Measure hallways, stairs, and tight corners. Front-load door swing: add 2-3 feet clearance. Consider reversible door models for tight spaces.
Electrical & Plumbing
Standard washers: 120V, 15-20 amp circuit. Outlet within 6 feet. Hot and cold water valves within 4 feet. Drain: standpipe 18-96 inches high, 1.5-2 inch diameter. Level floor required (max 1 degree slope).
Ventilation
Leave 1 inch clearance on sides and back for airflow. Front-load washers need ventilation to prevent mold. Enclosed laundry closets need exhaust fan or vent.
