How to size a treadmill
Match the equipment to body and space
Treadmill belt size by use: walking 18×50″ minimum; jogging 20×55″; running 22×60″. Over 6 ft tall? You want a 60″ belt minimum. Folding treadmills have hinged decks that swing up; check the locked-up footprint before assuming compact storage.
Floor space and ceiling clearance
Most home gym equipment lists a footprint, but the "operating envelope" — the area you actually need around it — is larger. Footprint: 30″×65″ compact, 35″×75″ standard, 40″×80″+ commercial. Allow 24″ on each side and 36″ behind for safety. Treadmills are heavy — verify your floor can support the running weight (machine + user) on a single point load.
Progression and storage
Motor power: 2.0–2.5 HP for walking, 2.5–3.0 HP for jogging, 3.0–3.5 HP+ for daily running. Continuous-duty rating matters more than peak HP; many cheap treadmills quote peak.
Common mistakes
- Buying the equipment first and discovering you have nowhere to put it; measure first.
- Ignoring ceiling height for overhead movements (presses, pull-ups, jump rope).
- Skipping flooring — concrete and hard floors damage equipment and increase noise; budget for mats.
