How to size a tennis court for your yard
Measure the usable area, not the lot
Singles court is 78′×27′; doubles court is 78′×36′. Total fenced area: 120′×60′ for a doubles court with proper run-back and side clearance. Pickleball courts (often shared) are 44′×20′ with 30′×60′ of total area.
Clearance from structures
Most jurisdictions require setbacks from property lines, structures, and overhead utility lines. Even where setbacks aren't legally required, allow at least 24″ from any wall or fence for maintenance access and to keep moisture from damaging both the structure and the new piece.
Anchoring and weight
Court surface must be sloped 1% (1 ft per 100 ft) in one direction to drain. Asphalt and concrete need a base course; clay courts require irrigation and rolling. Net height: 36″ centre, 42″ at posts. Chain-link fencing is typically 10 ft tall to keep balls in.
Common mistakes
- Sizing to the lot dimensions rather than the level usable space.
- Forgetting setback rules — some require permits even for things that look freestanding.
- Ignoring sun and wind direction; the right size in the wrong spot becomes unusable in summer or storms.
