Pillow Sizes Chart: Bed, Euro, Body and Throw Pillow Dimensions
Dimensions of every common pillow, how many of each fit across a twin, full, queen or king, which case or sham to buy, and how to size decorative pillows and inserts.
A standard pillow is 20 × 26 in (51 × 66 cm), a queen pillow is 20 × 30 in (51 × 76 cm) and a king pillow is 20 × 36 in (51 × 91 cm). All three are 20 in wide; only the length changes. A Euro pillow is a 26 × 26 in (66 × 66 cm) square.

Standard bed pillow sizes
Bed pillows in the US share a 20-in width and come in three lengths. The size on the label is the flat shell size, seam to seam. Once filled, a pillow looks about 2 in smaller in each direction, so a 20 × 26 in standard pillow plumps to roughly 18 × 24 in.
| Pillow | Inches | Centimeters | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 20 × 26 | 51 × 66 | Twin, full and queen beds; most sheet sets |
| Super standard | 20 × 28 | 51 × 71 | Slightly longer standard, still fits a standard case |
| Queen | 20 × 30 | 51 × 76 | Two exactly span a queen |
| King | 20 × 36 | 51 × 91 | King and Cal king beds, sitting up against a headboard |
| Euro | 26 × 26 | 66 × 66 | Back row against the headboard |
| Body | 20 × 54 | 51 × 137 | Side sleepers, pregnancy support |
| Toddler | 13 × 18 | 33 × 46 | Toddler beds |
| Travel | 12 × 16 | 30 × 41 | Camping, car trips, children |
A king pillow is not wider or thicker than a standard pillow, just 10 in longer. Its length makes it better for propping up to read and for covering a wide bed with fewer pillows, but it is heavier to turn over at night.
How many pillows fit each bed
Pillows sit side by side across the head of the bed, so the question is how their lengths add up against the mattress width.
| Bed (width) | Best fit | Total length | Alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin (38 in) | 1 standard | 26 in | 1 queen (30 in) |
| Full (54 in) | 2 standard | 52 in | 2 super standard (56 in, a slight overhang) |
| Queen (60 in) | 2 queen | 60 in | 2 standard (52 in) |
| King (76 in) | 2 king | 72 in | 3 standard (78 in) |
| California king (72 in) | 2 king | 72 in | 3 standard (78 in, slight overhang) |
A dressed bed adds rows in front of or behind the sleeping pillows. On a queen, a common arrangement is two Euro shams at the back (52 in total), two sleeping pillows in front of them, and one or two decorative pillows at the front. On a king, three Euro shams (78 in) span the width. Mattress widths for every size are in the mattress size chart.
Pillowcase and sham sizes
A pillowcase is about 4 in longer than its pillow so the pillow slides in and the open end can be tucked. A sham is a decorative cover with a closed back, and it is sized to the pillow itself, with a flange (a flat border of 2 to 3 in) added outside that.
| Pillow | Pillowcase (in) | Pillowcase (cm) | Sham fits pillow of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard / super standard | 20 × 30 | 51 × 76 | 20 × 26 in |
| Queen | 20 × 34 | 51 × 86 | 20 × 30 in |
| King | 20 × 40 | 51 × 102 | 20 × 36 in |
| Euro | Sham only | Sham only | 26 × 26 in |
| Body | About 20 × 58–60 | About 51 × 147–152 | 20 × 54 in |
Most sheet sets include standard cases for full and queen beds and king cases for king beds; see the bed sheet size chart. Comforter sets include matching shams, one for a twin and two for larger sizes, as listed on the comforter size guide.
A high-loft or memory foam pillow can be 6 to 7 in thick and fills a standard case tightly. If the case strains at the seams, step up one case size: a queen case (20 × 34 in) on a standard pillow leaves 8 in to tuck.
Pillow loft: how thick a pillow should be
Loft is the height of the pillow when it lies flat and uncompressed. The right loft keeps the head in line with the spine, so it depends mainly on sleeping position and shoulder width.
| Position | Loft | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach | Low: under 3 in (8 cm) | A thick pillow bends the neck backward |
| Back | Medium: 3–5 in (8–13 cm) | Supports the curve of the neck without pushing the head forward |
| Side | Medium-high: 4–6 in (10–15 cm) | Fills the gap between the mattress and the head created by the shoulder |
- Side sleepers: measure from the side of the neck to the outer edge of the shoulder. Pick a pillow whose compressed loft is close to that distance.
- Allow for the mattress. A soft mattress lets the shoulder sink, so you need a little less loft than on a firm one.
- Check thickness after compression, not out of the bag. Down and fiber pillows flatten noticeably under the weight of a head, while solid foam keeps most of its height.
Throw pillow and cushion sizes
Decorative pillows are measured by their cover, edge to edge, and come mostly in even-inch squares plus a few rectangular lumbar sizes.
| Size (in) | Size (cm) | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 12, 14 × 14 | 30 × 30, 36 × 36 | Accent chairs, window seats, the front row on a bed |
| 16 × 16 | 41 × 41 | Armchairs, smaller loveseats |
| 18 × 18 | 46 × 46 | The most common sofa pillow |
| 20 × 20 | 51 × 51 | Standard sofas with a tall back |
| 22 × 22, 24 × 24 | 56 × 56, 61 × 61 | Deep sectionals, beds, floor seating |
| 12 × 20, 14 × 24 (lumbar) | 30 × 51, 36 × 61 | Lower back support, the front of a bed |
| 14 × 36 (long lumbar) | 36 × 91 | Across a queen or king bed |
To choose a size for a sofa, compare it with the back cushion height: an 18 to 20-in pillow suits a sofa whose back rises about 18 to 20 in above the seat, and a deep sectional can take 22 to 24 in. Seat depths and back heights for common sofas are in the sofa dimensions guide.
Throw pillow insert vs cover size
Inserts are usually bought 1 to 2 in larger than the cover so the pillow looks full and the corners do not sag. A down or feather insert compresses more, so go 2 in up (a 20-in insert in an 18-in cover). A polyester insert holds its shape, so the same size or 1 in up is enough.
Pillow sizes outside the US
Pillow sizes differ by country more than mattress sizes do, and US cases rarely fit imported pillows well.
| Region | Common sizes (cm) | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 48 × 74 pillow in a 50 × 75 case; 50 × 90 king | 18.9 × 29.1; 19.7 × 35.4 |
| Germany | 80 × 80, 40 × 80 | 31.5 × 31.5, 15.7 × 31.5 |
| France | 60 × 60, 65 × 65 | 23.6 × 23.6, 25.6 × 25.6 |
| Scandinavia | 50 × 60, 50 × 70 | 19.7 × 23.6, 19.7 × 27.6 |
| Australia | 48 × 73 standard, 48 × 90 king | 18.9 × 28.7, 18.9 × 35.4 |
A European 65 × 65 cm pillow is close to a US Euro (66 × 66 cm), so US Euro shams fit it. A German 80 × 80 cm pillow is far larger than any US size and needs its own cases.
Pillows for children
Pillows, like blankets, should stay out of a baby's crib for the first 12 months under American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep advice. When a child does start using a pillow, a toddler pillow (13 × 18 in) is about half the area of a standard pillow and only 2 to 3 in thick, which suits a toddler's smaller shoulders. It fits a 28-in wide toddler bed with room to spare. Baby and toddler blanket sizes are covered in the blanket size guide.
Frequently asked questions
What size pillows go on a queen bed?
Two queen pillows (20 × 30 in) span the 60-in width of a queen mattress exactly. Two standard pillows (20 × 26 in) also work and leave 8 in of mattress showing; they fit standard cases, which are the ones included in most queen sheet sets.
What size pillows go on a king bed?
Two king pillows (20 × 36 in) cover 72 in of a 76-in king. Three standard pillows (78 in) also fit across a king. On a California king (72 in wide), two king pillows match the width exactly.
Will a queen pillow fit in a standard pillowcase?
Usually, yes. A standard case is about 20 × 30 in, so a 20 × 30 in queen pillow fills it completely with no room at the open end. A queen case (20 × 34 in) gives a neater fit.
What is the standard pillow size in cm?
A US standard pillow is 51 × 66 cm. In the UK the usual pillow is about 48 × 74 cm in a 50 × 75 cm case, and in continental Europe common sizes include 50 × 70, 60 × 60, 65 × 65 and 80 × 80 cm.
What size is a body pillow?
A standard body pillow is 20 × 54 in (51 × 137 cm), about the length of an adult from shoulder to knee. Cases are sold specifically for it, usually around 20 × 58 to 20 × 60 in.
What size is a toddler pillow?
Toddler pillows are about 13 × 18 in (33 × 46 cm) and much flatter than adult pillows. The AAP advises no pillows in a baby's sleep space before 12 months; a toddler pillow is for an older child, typically one in a toddler bed.
