Metric bath mat sizes
Bath mats sold in Europe, the UK, India and Australia come in round centimeter sizes. The three most common sizes are 40 × 60, 50 × 80 and 60 × 90 cm.

Floor space and door clearance
- Depth in front of fixtures: US code (IRC R307.1) requires 21 in (53 cm) of clear floor in front of a tub or sink and 24 in (61 cm) in front of a shower. A 21 or 24 in deep mat fills that zone without spilling into the walkway.
- Thickness: cotton and chenille mats are about 0.5-1 in (13-25 mm) thick; memory foam mats are often around 0.75-1 in. Many interior doors clear the floor by only about 0.5-0.75 in, so a thick mat in the door's swing will catch. Measure the gap under the door before buying.
- Distance from the tub: lay the mat 1-2 in (3-5 cm) from the tub apron or shower curb so water drips onto the mat instead of between the mat and the fixture.
- Heated floors: rubber or latex backing can trap heat over radiant floor heating. Check the mat label for compatibility.
A mat that slides is a fall risk on wet tile. Choose a non-slip backing or use a rug gripper cut slightly smaller than the mat. Rubber and latex backings break down in hot dryers, so follow the care label and replace a mat once the backing crumbles.
Bath mat vs bath rug vs bath towel mat
- Bath rug: a pile rug with a non-slip back, sized from 17 × 24 in to runners. Most of the sizes above are bath rugs.
- Terry bath mat: a flat, heavy towel-like mat, typically about 20 × 30 in to 21 × 34 in (51 × 76 cm to 53 × 86 cm). It has no backing, so it is washed with towels and laid down after each shower.
- Inside-the-tub mat: a rubber or vinyl mat with suction cups, usually about 14-16 in × 27-40 in (36-41 × 69-102 cm), sized to the tub floor rather than the bathroom floor.
