Expect foam bags to sit several inches lower than these heights once they are in use. Note how heavy foam fill is: a 6 ft foam bag weighs about as much as a small loveseat, so it is not something to move room to room every day.

Choosing the right size
- Decide sit or lie. For sitting upright, 3 ft suits children and 4 ft suits most teens and adults. To lie back with the legs supported as well, go up one size.
- Match the user's height. Adults over about 6 ft are comfortable lounging only on 5 ft bags and up. To lie full length, the bag's width should be close to the person's height: a 7 ft bag (84 in) for someone up to about 6 ft 6 in.
- Count people. Two adults share a 6 ft bag at a squeeze and a 7-8 ft bag comfortably.

When topping up, fill the inner liner, not the outer cover, and do it outdoors or over a sheet, since loose beads are static and spread easily.
Bean bag safety for young children
Children have suffocated or choked after unzipping bean bags and inhaling or swallowing the small foam beads. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled zippered bean bags for this reason, and the voluntary standard ASTM F1912 calls for zippers that a child cannot open. In homes with young children, choose a bag with a locking or permanently closed zipper and an inner liner, and replace a bag with a damaged zipper or seam.
